Create a Jabber Account
Jabber (XMPP) is an Open Source IM Protocol (Not unlike MSN Messenger, AIM or YIM.) It offers a lot of different suffixes for the address, which in turn allows for more customization than other services. Here is an example of how to make one finishing with Jabber.org, but it can be applied with any address from other XMPP public servers.
- Note: Jabber.org has discontinued registration. However, these instructions can be applied to other Jabber servers as well.
Steps
- Go to a Jabber Client, download it and install it. This How-To will Use Psi, so it is best if you use the same.
- Click the Psi-Logo in the bottom left corner.
- Click Account Setup.
- Click Add.
- In the name field, type in what you want the first part of it to be. (This would be thisbithere@jabber.org, not the Jabber.org itself.)
- Click the box next to "Register New Account."
- Click "Add."
- Use the drop down box and select jabber.org, or whatever suffix you would like.
- Click Next.
- Type in a username and a password of your choice.
- Click next.
- Done!
