Create a Library in Your Home

A library is a great way to enhance your home with a quiet place to enjoy your love of books. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Steps

  1. Find a room in your house for the library. You need your own space for your library to put your books and a few seats for your visitors at your library. If your family has a spare room in the house, that’s a good place to have it. Alternatively, you can make a library-type space by setting up a couple of large bookcases in a corner of a room.
  2. Begin your book collection. You can start with the books you already own.

    • Augment your current collection by picking up a variety of quality books. You can often find inexpensive books at garage sales, library sales, and estate sales.
    • You can focus on building a broad library of classics, and newer books, fiction and nonfiction, or specialize in a topic, era, style or other interest.
    • Find speciality books at used booksellers, or online bookseller or auction site.
  3. Create seating arrangements. When your family comes to your library they want to have a nice, quiet, and comfortable place to read. You can have comfortable chairs to sit in and you could possibly have a small table.
  4. Finished.

Tips

  • A personal library is more about having a space you enjoy and the books you like than trying to appeal to all tastes. Don't add books you don't care for just to appear intellectual or appeal to the tastes of others.
