Create a Personal Gift for a Baby

Going to a baby shower? You might be competitive when giving gifts, and want to make sure you have the "best gift". When doing this you have to get something that the baby will use, but will mean something to the parents. Getting more than one gift won't hurt, to have the "best gift". Just remember, this isn't a competition, but if you are a competitive person, it can be hard not to want to have the best gift.

Steps

  1. Gather together the items listed in the "Things You'll Need" section.
  2. Learn the baby's full name, date of birth, height (meaning inches) and weight at birth.
  3. Practice writing the information about the baby on a piece of paper, in your very best printed handwriting style.
  4. Choose a location on the sheet where the information can be applied, by pen, and be easily read; carefully examine matters, such as are you using a fitted or regular crib sheet. Choose an area (on one corner) where the information can be easily read. On the pillowcase the information needs to be written in, on the section that the pillow slides in...and on the top corner of the top half (where the baby's head will lay).
  5. Once the location has been decided (attach the hoop) to the designated spot, on both the sheet and then the pillowcase...it doesn't matter which you do first (read tip below).
  6. Be very careful about writing the information on the sheet and pillowcase, using either the black or blue pen. Keep a steady hand, and allow the ink to set before moving on to next step.
  7. Carefully select the color of thread that you desire to use, which will depend mainly on the color of sheet and pillowcase. Multiple colors can be used, such as one color for the name and another for the birth date, etc.
  8. Take your time and go over each letter with a few strands of thread, in order for it to be bold and to stand out. Simply follow each handwritten letter; it is best to needle stitch going from side to side...and don't forget to tie off.

Tips

  • This is a gift that will long be cherished, way after the baby is grown. It can easily be packed away in a chest, then passed on later, after the child is grown and has his or her own children.
  • Step # 6 can be performed before applying the loop on step # 5, which ever works best for you.
  • On the hoop, be sure that the material is pulled tight, and that the latch is well-secured, before you begin to sew your first stitch.
  • If not satisfied with the finished product, carefully snip thread, pull and start all over.
  • If you're good at embroidering then a little blanket with the baby's name on is also lovely to add.

Warnings

  • Be sure that you do tie off properly, for you do not want the threading to come out, once washed.
