Dance to Rock Music

A brief overview of how to dance rock music using the technique knowing as "head banging".

Steps

  1. Head banging is performed by nodding the head, usually violently, in time with the music. Long hair helps but is not essential. It also involves jumping in one place.
  2. Stand as close to the stage or DJ or speakers as you can. Stand next to other like-minded music fans, facing the stage/DJ/etc.
  3. Take an athletic stance and lean/bend forward; the longer your hair the more you need to lean forward.
  4. Nod your head up and down, ensuring that the end of your down stroke is in time with the beat of the music.
  5. If your hair is long you should pause just a little bit at the end of the down stroke before pulling your head up. This is for dramatic effect to allow the hair to swoop down.
  6. Throw up the horns, or pump a fist.

Tips

  • HAVE FUN.
  • If your hair is short, do not attempt to nod too enthusiastically, as if you had long hair. You will get funny looks. Instead, take smaller nods and do not stoop too low.
  • Allow yourself plenty of room in front of you so that you do not bash into someone else.
  • Keep your neck muscles loose; it will give you a greater range of motion and your neck will not be as tight the next morning.
  • The most important thing is to be in time with the music.
  • Some variation is good, such as banging one's head at a diagonal instead of straight forward.
  • Look at other music fans to see how they dance, and try to emulate them.

Warnings

  • If your neck becomes sore, rest for a while.
  • If you know that you will be around the loud music for a while, wear ear plugs. There are special ear plugs just for musicians/music lovers, and many of them can't be seen unless someone is looking very closely.
  • If a Human Pyramid looks unstable don't go on it.
  • Be careful if you're wearing glasses. They might fall off and get stepped upon.
  • If a mosh pit breaks out, remain calm and don't take it personally. Pits are about random shoving, not punching people in the face. You will probably not get into a fight because of a pit. If someone falls, ALWAYS stop to help them up. You don't want anyone going to the hospital.
  • Tinnitus is a very serious condition, which can be brought about by exposure to loud noises. If you have a ringing or buzzing in your ears after listening to loud rock music, please see a doctor.
  • If the dancing becomes too violent for you, for example pushing and shoving, you could get hurt, so leave the area.
  • Unfortunately, some songs just can't be danced to, such as Led Zeppelin's Black Dog.
  • Protect your hearing, never expose yourself to loud music for too long. It WILL damage your hearing, even if you don't notice it at the time.

Things You'll Need

  • A source of LOUD music
  • A supple neck
  • A bottle of water (If you don't want to lose your spot by getting a drink)
  • Guy Grist
