Decorate an Evergreen Wreath Using Only Small Lights

A wreath on your front door (or in the house) is a symbol of welcome and hospitality. Light up a wreath! You don't need ornaments; the soft glow of light is the invitation.

Steps

  1. Hang the wreath on a nail, loop a length of wire completely at the "top" of the wreath to form a hanger (20 gauge wire will do). If you're going to be using an over-the-door hanger, you can either make the wire loop to hang it from the hanger, or simply set the opening of the wreath over the hanger. If you expect strong winds, you may want to use four positions of wire loops on nails; top, bottom and one on each side.
  2. Take the artificial garland apart. You will have lengths of wired pine about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long.
  3. Determine where the power source will feed the light string. That will be where the male end of the light string will be anchored (unless you are using battery operated lights).
  4. Use a length of the artificial pine, twist it into your wreath and attach the male end of the light string.Turn on the lights.
  5. Loosely drape the entire string of lights in and around the natural branches of your wreath. Uniformly reposition the light string until you are satisfied with the appearance of their glow.
  6. Use the lengths of the artificial garland, follow the light string and anchor it to the natural foliage of the wreath. The wire in the artificial garland will not show and you've "puffed up" the entire wreath!

Tips

  • Never be afraid to mix the real stuff with artificial stuff.
  • Construct your wreath indoors, using an easel if possible. You can also use a wooden ladder with a screw drilled into the top/shelf part of the ladder on which to hang the wreath to get a full view of your work. Park your easel near an electrical outlet if you are using electrical lights.

Things You'll Need

  • Your preferred string of lights.
  • A hanger for the wreath (wire if you're hanging it on a nail, or an over-the-door hanger)
  • An inexpensive, wired pine garland that is compatible with your natural wreath (a wired berry garland works, too).
  • A power source to plug it in (or use battery-operated lights).
  • An easel (optional, but very convenient).
