Delete an iPhone App

This article teaches you how to remove an app from your iPhone. Depending on your phone's settings, you may first need to enable the "Delete Apps" permission in the "Restrictions" menu.

10 Second Summary

1. Lightly touch and hold an app until it starts wiggling.
2. Tap the X in the app's top-left corner.
3. Tap Delete when prompted to confirm.

Steps

Deleting Apps

  1. Locate the app you want to delete. It will be either on the Home Screen or on one of your iPhone's subsequent pages.
    • You can scroll through iPhone pages by swiping left over the screen.
  2. Tap and hold the app. You don't need to press down particularly hard; simply touch the screen. Doing so will cause all apps on the screen to begin wiggling.
    • If you have an iPhone 6S or newer, pressing down on your screen may invoke the 3D Touch menu; if you see an option that says "Share [App Name]" along with other options in a menu below your app, you're pressing too hard.
  3. Tap X. It's in the top-left corner of the app.
  4. Tap Delete when prompted. This option will appear in the middle of the screen. Tapping Delete will remove the app and all of its information from your phone.
    • Press the Home button to exit the wiggling app mode.

Disabling Restrictions

  1. Open your iPhone's Settings. It's a grey app with gears that is likely on the Home Screen.
  2. Tap General. This option is near the bottom of the screen.
    • If your iPhone has a 4.7-inch screen, you'll need to scroll down to see General.
  3. Scroll down and tap Restrictions. It's near the middle of the "General" page.
  4. Type in your Restrictions Passcode. It's a four-digit code that you created when you initially set up the Restrictions parameters.
    • The restrictions passcode may be different than your iPhone's unlock code.
  5. Scroll down and slide Deleting Apps left to the "Off" position.
    • Alternatively, you can simply disable Restrictions altogether by tapping Disable Restrictions at the top of the page and then entering your Restrictions Passcode to confirm.
  6. Proceed with deleting an app. Now that your Restrictions permit you to delete an app, you can do so from the Home Screen.

Tips

  • You may also need to Delete-Apps in order to prevent iTunes from adding the app back into your iPhone the next time you sync your music.
  • If you accidentally Delete-Stock-iPhone-Apps, you can reinstall it from within the "Purchased" section of the App Store.
  • Some apps won't show the "delete" button; these apps are "permanent" apps that ship with iPhone and are locked from deletion.
  • Deleting an app will also delete all the data stored locally with it.
