Steps
- Lay out an old newspaper or a magazine on the surface of where you're dying your hair.
- Take out an old toothbrush (that you will no longer need),a plastic tub, and a colour of food colouring of your choice.
- Brush your hair until it is untangled, and section it in two ( three or four if your hair is thick)
- Pour some food colouring in the middle of the plastic tub and cover the bristles of the toothbrush with the food colouring.
- Place your hair down on the newspaper/magazine (the ends) and hold it down.
- Take the toothbrush and place it at the point you want the colour to start. If you have longer hair, start further up for a better look. Take the toothbrush and comb it all the way down to the tips. Remember to brush through thoroughly in order to get every strand. With each section, check that the starting place is even to avoid a wonky look!
- Rinse hair. Initially, it may look like all the dye is coming out, but do not worry. This is just the colour that did not cling onto the hair being washed out.
- Blow dry until your hair is completely dry.
- Once it is dry, brush through and enjoy your newly dip dyed hair!
Tips
- Leave it for longer for it to be brighter.
- Use a stronger colour on dark hair and a lighter colour on light hair.
- Use an old towel because it stains when it drips.
- Use a dark colour, because it will turn out lighter.
- Use a detangling spray if you have knotty hair.
- Dying your full head may not give you good results, try doing streaks instead!
- If you have curly hair, straighten it first to achieve best results.
- If you concentrate the dye too much and use it on light hair, it will look silly.
- Wear an old shirt so the food coloring doesn't stain.
- Leave the colour be for at least 24 hours.
- If you are younger, be sure to ask permission from a parent or guardian first.

- If you get any food colouring on clothes, it may stain.
- Try to use gloves while using food colouring, as it may colour your fingers as well as your hair!
