Dip Dye Hair Temporarily

This year the hair trend does seem to be having 'dip-dyed' hair, where the last few inches of your hair are a different colour to your main hair colour. This guide is for anyone who wants to change their style without commitment or experimenting before making it permanent, or just to liven up your hair for an occasion! Uses temporary hair colour spray, (always check the bottle states temporary!).

Steps

  1. Firstly, wash hair. Condition as well, because dip-dying focuses on the oldest and therefore driest section of your hair, and this process can dry your hair out.
  2. Gently towel dry your hair. If necessary at this point, add a leave in conditioner to your hair to make it shiny and the ends healthy.
  3. Dry hair and detangle. Use a wide toothed comb to clear you hair of any knots. If you have very curly hair, it may be an idea to blow dry your hair straighter, to make application of colour easier.
  4. Leave your hair to air dry until your hair is roughly 70% dry. Now, blow dry into the style you desire. Once finished, leave your hair for a little while longer, to ensure it is fully dry. If your event is in the evening, wash your hair in the morning or even the night before, depending on your hair type.
  5. When you are sure your hair is dry, comb through hair and use clips to section your hair into four sections, from ear to ear and from the nape of your neck to the top of your head (and so you have a cross on the back of your head).
  6. Go to a place that has either been covered, somewhere where a rogue spray won't annoy anyone, or, outside. Make sure you are wearing old clothes, as temporary hair spray can stain material.
  7. Take one of the bottom sections first. Comb through to ensure there are no clumps or knots. Take the section and separate into further smaller sections. Decide where you want the dip to start, take your spray canister and aim it down the hair, from the marker you just decided towards the ends of you hair. This ensures you don't go above the line you just decided. Comb through, and respray to cover as much hair as possible. If you want the dip-dye line to be quite blurred, back comb hair prior to spraying, or simply spray hair a little more randomly and not so precisely up to the line.
  8. Continue with your other bottom section of your hair on the other side of your head.
  9. Un-clip your top layer of hair. If your hair is cut in layers here, you may need to spray less of your hair. Line it up with the dip on the underneath layer and continue spraying in the same method.
  10. Finish all your hair.
  11. Try not to touch your hair until you are confident it is dry! And try to wear black, or clothes the same colour as your dye as it may come off onto clothes.
  12. Make sure you're not the odd one out at school, dip dye with a friend!

Tips

  • Practice on a strand of hair to check colour, style, and also how well it washes out.
  • For dark hair you should choose lighter colors, for lighter hair you should choose darker colors, just to make it look better for both types of hair.
  • Don't overdo this, as it can dry your hair out.
  • There are a wide range of colours available- choose one to suit you!
  • Curly hair may need to be straightened first, to make application easier.
  • If you don't really know what to do try doing it on some extensions first.

Warnings

  • Try to wash your hair before bed as it may otherwise come off onto your pillow and stain it!
  • Be careful when washing your hair to get all of the dye out, so none comes off on the towel! And don't drip coloured water everywhere else the bathroom owner will get annoyed!
  • Always check your dye is temporary as it may otherwise not wash out fully and tint your hair!
  • Be careful when applying. Cover furniture and the carpet where you spray, as this can stain. Avoid getting it on clothes, as it can stain these too.
