Do a Dance Turn

Are you a dancer or person who likes to dance? This step by step training will help you with your turns. This particular turn is called a pirouette in ballet.

Steps

  1. Start off flexed on the ground. Put one leg in front of the other, put all your weight on the front foot. If you want to turn right put your left leg in front to do left is the opposite. Remember your weight should be on your front foot so you can easily push off into the turn.
  2. Pick up one leg to knee-height. Make sure your foot is connected to your supporting leg.
  3. The arm movements are very distinct as well. When turning right and you are up on releve, your arms are to your side. Once you plie, your right arm should be straight forward and your left arm up to the side. When you come up for the turn, your arms should be together.
  4. Practice balancing on one foot for as long as possible. Once you get the hang of that...
    • Pivot your body 360o on one leg.
    • Practice this again and again until you can do multiple turns without putting your foot down. You can only do multiple turns if you spot your head, if your stomach muscles are engaged, and you practice frequently.
  5. Spotting must be applied when you are turning. Spotting is when you cause your head and eyes to "start first" and "finish first" throughout the sequence of a turn while keeping your body centered. What’s important about spotting is that you learn how to "separate" your head from your body as you turn. You will never be able to do multiple turns if you don't spot.

Tips

  • Don't think intently about what you're doing when you're turning, just do it.
  • Check into taking dance classes for more detailed lessons.
  • Keep your rounded and at the height of your rib cage.
  • The arms and posture depend on which type of ballet you are using. For example, the Russian ballet has a different stance than American ballet.
  • Your stomach muscles MUST be engaged to do multiple pirouettes or any other turn for that matter. Think of pulling your belly button back into your spine. Your stomach is your center of control in dance, and without it, you will look sloppy and be unable to perform advanced steps.
  • Don't go too fast because if you do you will lose balance really fast. Also, make sure you squeeze your the tummy and butt.
  • Practice every day while watching videos of how to do it or taking a dance class.
  • Pull your hair back in a ponytail or a bun.

Warnings

  • Remember to always stretch your legs so you don't tear your muscles practicing.
  • Always make sure you two arms lengths of space between you and other objects/people.
