Do an Arm Wave

The arm wave is one of the fundamental moves in the dance of popping. The arm wave consists of a series of movements that shows the wave traveling through the body.

Steps

  1. Hold out both arms and form the shape of the letter "T".
  2. Begin at either end by starting with the first step of pointing your wrist downwards.
  3. Lift up your arm and point your elbow upwards. Your wrist should be back at the starting position.
  4. Lift your shoulder and straighten out your arm at a diagonal.
  5. Stick out your chest as far as you can without hurting yourself, but enough to show the wave moving through across your arm.
  6. Continue to the other shoulder and lift it while the arm of the lifted shoulder remains straight at a diagonal.
  7. Put down your shoulder and lift up your elbow.
  8. Straighten out your arm and point your wrist downwards.
  9. Bring wrist back up to form the "T" shape.

Tips

  • Don't worry about how many or how fast your arm wave is. Quality over quantity.
  • Practice step by step and continue through the movements once you feel comfortable enough.
  • Start out slow in front of a mirror if possible. It's better to practice it the correct way the first time through.
  • Your entire arm should remain as relaxed as possible.

Warnings

  • There shouldn't be any major injuries for this move, or any injuries at all.
  • If your arm gets tired, take a break.
  • Be sure that no one is in your way so you do not smack them in the face when you start the wave.
