Draw Flames

This step-by-step guide will teach you the basics of how to draw flames. Flames are most commonly used in co-ordinance with fire, but are not limited to fire. Let's begin!

Steps

Cartoon Flames

  1. Create a graphic mountain-like drawing with a few peaks.
  2. Repeat a second line of mountains below that.
  3. And again a third line.
  4. Extend regular peaks of steep edges from the topmost base.
  5. Draw flowing lines and curves to complete the flames on the basis of the guides.
  6. Erase all guidelines.
  7. Color the flames.

Simple Flames

  1. Create three peaks of a mountain with straight lines.
  2. Repeat a second line below that.
  3. Repeat it for the third time below the above made.
  4. Overlap the mountain-like lines with isosceles triangles.
  5. Draw the flames in detail with necessary curves based on the above guides.
  6. Erase all the guides.
  7. Color the flames.

Tips

  • Don't try too hard as it will only make it more complicated. It can be simple, but you're in control of that.
  • Don't be fooled by people saying that you need art pencils to do good drawings, it's a load of rubbish. It's about the artist not the pencils. If you gave a baby some art pencils he wouldn't give you back a piece of work in Picasso standards.
  • Be sure to add the extra sparks around the fire, it really makes the fire look ten times better.
  • For more realism, create a smoke effect at the bottom of your flames.
