Draw Furniture in 3D
Draw a piece of furniture or any object in a three-dimensional sketch by first creating a 3D block.
Use the 3D block as a guideline.
A 3D sketch shows the width, the height and the length of an object.
Horizontal edges are at a 30-degree angle. Vertical edges are kept vertical.
Steps
- Purchase a graph pad with 1/ 4” squares. Or create your own grid of equal squares on a blank sheet of paper.
- Count 10 squares over from the left edge of the paper.
- Draw a dot at the bottom right corner of any square near the middle of the paper.
- Label this dot # 1. Count lines to locate the next point or use the ruler to measure the distance.
- Count 12 lines (3”) to the right from dot # 1 and 7 lines (1-3/4”) up.
- Mark this point with a dot and label it # 2.
- Use the ruler to join dot # 1 and dot # 2 with a light line. This line is at a 30-degree angle.
- Go to dot # 1. Count 7 lines (1-3/4”) to the left of dot # 1 and 4 lines (1”) up.
- Mark this point with a dot and label it # 3.
- Use the ruler to join dot # 1 and dot # 3 with a light line. This line is at a 30-degree angle to the left.
- Go to dot # 1. Count 8 lines (2”) up from dot # 1.
- Mark this point with a dot and label it # 4.
- Use the ruler to join dot # 1 and dot # 4 with a light line. This is a straight vertical line.
- Go to dot # 3. Count 8 lines (2”) up from dot # 3.
- Mark this point with a dot and label it # 5.
- Use the ruler to join dot # 3 and dot # 5 with a light line. This is a straight vertical line parallel to the line from dot # 1 to # 4.
- Go to dot # 2. Count 8 lines (2”) up from dot # 2.
- Mark this point with a dot and label it # 6.
- Use the ruler to join dot # 2 and dot # 6 with a light line.
- Go to dot # 1. Count 5 lines (1-1/4”) to the right from dot # 1 and 19 lines (4-3/4”) up.
- Mark this point with a dot and label it # 7.
- Use the ruler to joint dot # 4 and # 6 with a light line. This line is parallel to the line from dot # 1 to # 2.
- Use the ruler to joint dot # 4 and # 5 with a line. This line is parallel to the line from dot # 1 to # 3.
- Use the ruler to join dot # 5 and dot # 7 with a light line. This line is parallel to the line from dot # 4 to # 6.
- Use the ruler to join dot # 6 and dot # 7 with a light line. The light lines form a block as a guide to draw furniture.
- Sketch an item of furniture within the block. Keep all lines for the furniture parallel to the lines of the block.
- Place the tracing paper over the block outline to draw new items without having to redraw the block each time.
Tips
- This type of 3D sketch is called an isometric drawing.
