Draw Furniture in 3D

Draw a piece of furniture or any object in a three-dimensional sketch by first creating a 3D block.
Use the 3D block as a guideline.
A 3D sketch shows the width, the height and the length of an object.
Horizontal edges are at a 30-degree angle. Vertical edges are kept vertical.

Steps

  1. Purchase a graph pad with 1/ 4” squares. Or create your own grid of equal squares on a blank sheet of paper.
  2. Count 10 squares over from the left edge of the paper.
  3. Draw a dot at the bottom right corner of any square near the middle of the paper.
  4. Label this dot # 1. Count lines to locate the next point or use the ruler to measure the distance.
  5. Count 12 lines (3”) to the right from dot # 1 and 7 lines (1-3/4”) up.
  6. Mark this point with a dot and label it # 2.
  7. Use the ruler to join dot # 1 and dot # 2 with a light line. This line is at a 30-degree angle.
  8. Go to dot # 1. Count 7 lines (1-3/4”) to the left of dot # 1 and 4 lines (1”) up.
  9. Mark this point with a dot and label it # 3.
  10. Use the ruler to join dot # 1 and dot # 3 with a light line. This line is at a 30-degree angle to the left.
  11. Go to dot # 1. Count 8 lines (2”) up from dot # 1.
  12. Mark this point with a dot and label it # 4.
  13. Use the ruler to join dot # 1 and dot # 4 with a light line. This is a straight vertical line.
  14. Go to dot # 3. Count 8 lines (2”) up from dot # 3.
  15. Mark this point with a dot and label it # 5.
  16. Use the ruler to join dot # 3 and dot # 5 with a light line. This is a straight vertical line parallel to the line from dot # 1 to # 4.
  17. Go to dot # 2. Count 8 lines (2”) up from dot # 2.
  18. Mark this point with a dot and label it # 6.
  19. Use the ruler to join dot # 2 and dot # 6 with a light line.
  20. Go to dot # 1. Count 5 lines (1-1/4”) to the right from dot # 1 and 19 lines (4-3/4”) up.
  21. Mark this point with a dot and label it # 7.
  22. Use the ruler to joint dot # 4 and # 6 with a light line. This line is parallel to the line from dot # 1 to # 2.
  23. Use the ruler to joint dot # 4 and # 5 with a line. This line is parallel to the line from dot # 1 to # 3.
  24. Use the ruler to join dot # 5 and dot # 7 with a light line. This line is parallel to the line from dot # 4 to # 6.
  25. Use the ruler to join dot # 6 and dot # 7 with a light line. The light lines form a block as a guide to draw furniture.
  26. Sketch an item of furniture within the block. Keep all lines for the furniture parallel to the lines of the block.
  27. Place the tracing paper over the block outline to draw new items without having to redraw the block each time.
