Draw a Human Eye

A human eye is one of the most difficult things to draw realistically. Eyes are extremely expressive, which means they vary a lot from person to person. Here's how to draw a basic human eye. Soon you'll be on your way to drawing the rest of the person, too!

Steps

  1. Draw a big circle to serve as a guideline for the eye socket. This will help you make the eye proportionate to other facial features, such as eyebrows. Draw these in if you like, and add a little shadow underneath the eye socket.
  2. Sketch out the eyeball within the eye socket. It should be circular, just like the eye socket. Remember, an eye is technically spherical, but the presence of eyelids (which we'll add next) makes it look as though it isn't.
  3. Shape the eye using eyelids. Eyes tend to be almond-shaped, so bear this in mind as you sketch them. As a rule of thumb, the distance between two eyes is the width of another eye (in case you're drawing a full face).
  4. Draw the iris and pupil of the eye. The iris should be larger and lighter than the pupil, with a spot of shine on it to look more realistic. Shade the pupil very darkly.
  5. Finally, sketch in the top of the eyelid over the almond-shaped eye. Add eyelashes to the top and bottom and you're finished![[Image:top of eyelid Step 05.jpg|center]

Tips

  • Try to make the eyelashes loose instead of making them straight up.
