Draw an Anime Girl's Face

Anime girl faces are most known for the huge brilliant eyes and unique hairstyles. The faces are young, sweet, and charming. Learning to draw anime faces will take practice but will increase your artistic skills. Follow these steps to learn to draw an anime girl's face. Let's begin!

Steps

With Long Hair

  1. An anime girl's head comes in different shapes but we always start by sketching a circle to draw the head.
  2. Sketch a line from the top of the circle to the area where the chin will be located, to determine the center of the face.
  3. Complete the shape of the head by sketching the shape of the jaw/cheeks and the chin.
  4. Sketch lines to determine the area where the eyes, nose, and mouth will be located.
  5. Sketch the details of the face using the lines as a guide.
  6. Sketch the remaining details for the hair, neck and torso as needed.
  7. Use a smaller tipped drawing tool to refine the artwork and draw the final outline.
  8. Erase the sketch marks and add color.

With Short Hair

  1. Lightly draw an upside-down water drop kind of shape on your paper. Add a cross through the center.
  2. Add in the eyes (on the horizontal line) and the eyebrows (slightly above), making sure they are both one eye apart. This is important, because if you draw them too close, it will look like your character is cross-eyed.
  3. Add the nose on the vertical line. All you have to do is draw in a small shaded triangle. Make sure your nose is about one eye under the eyes. Add in the mouth a little bit under the nose.
  4. Draw a marker for the ears, and draw your jawline and chin. It should curve upwards a little bit when you reach the mouth line.
  5. Add the fringe, making sure there is enough forehead. Then, draw the outside of the hair, leaving some space between your scalp line. This will add some effect to your hair.
  6. Add a neck and shoulders. Make sure your neck isn't too wide. Anime characters have quite thin necks, and it looks better too, especially if it's a girl. Erase out your marker lines.
  7. Finally, shade in or color in your drawing. You are now done!

Tips

  • Detail is the most important part! Add as much little detail as you can (shading, lighting), especially in the eyes, because they all add up and look great in the end.
  • Take a good look at anime characters you like. What makes the styles different of different anime?
  • Practice a lot. Try drawing different styles and, especially, different emotions and attitudes. What makes an expression look glum, embarrassed, scared, shy, and so on? When you get to drawing the characters' bodies, remember that posture can also say a lot about mood.
  • Anime shading, if you start to get into it, is very bold. Look closely at examples.
  • Look at and analyze different styles of anime and what different artists do well.
  • You can make up your own or emulate a drawing of a character you've seen.
  • Find a anime girl or boy that you like and try to draw that one.

Warnings

  • Be careful not to smudge your drawing if you put your arm down.
