Dress Emo for School Without Overdoing It

Maybe you've seen emo style online, or an emo kid that goes to your school. Whatever the reason, you're now interested in the emo subculture and you want to enter it, but not get completely absorbed by it. Fortunately, there are ways to be clearly emo without overdoing it.

Steps

  1. Get the right pants. Buy some dark-colored jeans. They can be skinny or baggy; both are great. If you're going with skinny jeans, find some that fit well but aren't too tight. That way, if you have to change at school, it won't take long.
    • It doesn't matter if you decide to get "girl" jeans; clothes for boys and clothes for girls are made of the same fabric and thread; they just get labeled differently. Clothes don't have genders and neither does being emo.
  2. Find some studded belts and rubber bracelets. Band or anime bracelets are great emo style is closely related to music, and many anime are intense enough to suit the style. (But hey, if you want to wear a Sailor Moon bracelet, by all means, go for it. Don't pretend to like something just because of its image.)
  3. Buy some shirts. Shirts can be any dark color, such as black, red, blue, and even forest green. Graphic designs, novelty tees, and band shirts also suit emo style.
    • Bands with an emo flair include:
      • Fall Out Boy
      • Linkin Park
      • Metallica
      • My Chemical Romance
      • Panic! At the Disco
      • Twenty One Pilots
      • Pierce the Veil
      • All Time Low
      • Black Veil Brides
      • Paramore
      • Green Day
      • Blink-182
      • Muse
  4. Get the hair. Hair is an important part of the emo look; one of the most stereotypical things about emo kids is the fringe. If you want, dye your hair darker/lighter or even get unnatural colors. If your parents won't let you color your hair, go to a store that sells extensions, or go to a beauty shop and get some colored hair spray. If you can't find colored extensions, buy normal ones and dye them.
    • This goes for guys as well, the emo subculture isn't gender role conforming and anyone can wear basically all emo clothes/makeup/accessories/hair etc.
  5. Look for jackets. Any jacket that's a dark color will work, especially leather jackets with or without studs. Jackets with band patches are also a great choice. You can buy these or even make your own.
  6. Get the shoes. Shoes recommended are Converse, Vans, Circa or any skate shoes.(Converse aren't skate shoes, though Vans and Circa are.)
  7. Get a bag/backpack. Since you're dressing for school, you'll need a backpack. A simple messenger bag with pins and patches will do. Alternatively, you can get a normal backpack with skulls, checkers, or neon colors. You can also buy bags easily online with a print of an "emo band" or youtuber on it. Any backpack that you like will would do.
  8. Have the attitude. Emo kids have a reputation for being emotional, shy, etc. After all, emo is short for emotional. But don't follow any stereotypes just for the sake of it. However, being introspective is a plus outside of being emo, as it helps you realize things you may have never thought before. Also be thoughtful, go to quiet places, and just listen to new music. Be yourself and don't feel like you have to change yourself to be stereotypically emo.

Tips

  • Hot Topic is the place to go for emo clothes and accessories.
  • Plaid and flannel are your friends.
  • If people ask if you're emo just respond: "No" with a hint of a chuckle and continue walking. This will make them think you're emo, especially because you're denying it.
  • If you're going for scene, wear a lot of neon colours. If you're emo, go for mainly black with neons or white.
  • Hairstyles are all about individuality, so create your own hairstyles. Be creative!
  • Eyeliner is good no matter what gender you identify as; as long as you're comfortable with it, it's totally cool.
  • Piercings are great for the emo look, but not a must-have if you're young or your parents won't let you. Remember, guys have earrings too.
  • One of the best places to get band and vintage shirts are at thrift stores.
  • Don't get emo confused with a scene. The scene is with all the color hair and stuff. Emo is more black and red. Goth is NOT emo. Goth is completely different.
  • If you can't afford merchandise, accessories, etc. You can look for some good deals on eBay!!

Warnings

  • Don't cut yourself! Despite the stereotype, emo does not automatically equal cutting. If you do feel like harming yourself or others, tell your parent/guardian, family member, teacher, counselor, therapist, etc. It is not worth it and will just cause pain for everyone in the end.
