Avoid Being Hated As an Emo
As you may well be aware, Emos don't have a reputation for being the most popular kinds of people. So, these are some easy steps on how to be your wonderful emo self and still be appreciated for it.
Steps
- Be nice. Just because you're a follower of a certain sub genre does not mean you have to stick to people who are also associated with that particular category. Talk to everyone and remember to be happy. People are automatically drawn away from people who are sad, depressed or unhappy.
- Nobody likes posers. Especially the few real followers of emo out there. Make sure you know the background and history of emotive hardcore, you do NOT need to dress in stereotypical emo style to become 'emo'. If someone asks you what emo is, you give them a correct definition, not a lecture on how they are depressed and self-harmers. It's all about the music.
- Avoid becoming a stereotype. Don't think you have to fake depression to become 'emo', you're still a person and you don't deserve to be or feel any lower than that.
- Make more new friends. If you're in a group, you're less likely to be picked on. If you're by yourself people might see you as an easier target. If someone comes up to you merely stay calm and avoid any awkward questions and insults if possible.
- Learn to laugh at yourself. If you accidentally fall over, don't complain, whine, or get emotionally hurt. If you laugh at yourself and everyone else is laughing, it means they're laughing with you.
- Avoid labelling yourself emo, well not all the time. If you actually listen to emo bands, know about the history and background of the sub genre and refer to the label then yes you are.
- Have fun being yourself, even if you grow out of your phase.
Warnings
- If you have friends who are not emo, they could react negatively to the change. Give them time to adjust.
- If you are forced to defend yourself, try to avoid physical contact unless absolutely necessary.
- Don't attempt to stand up to haters if it puts you in physical danger.
