Steps

  1. Get that perfect dress! You can get a gorgeous dress anywhere from Target, and Kohls, to Windsor, and Nordstrom! Depending on what your budget is, try to get a dress that is in your price range, and that you like. If you don't like the dress you are in, you will end up being uncomfortable, and regret your decision. Try to get a dress that complements your body, and isn't too uncomfortable. If your dress is tight, and unpleasant, then you will be miserable while at the event. It's best to get a dress in your price range, you like, isn't too uncomfortable, and complements the shape of your body.
  2. =Mix it up with some jewelry and accessories. If you can't buy the "perfect dress",and have to wear a plain old dress, that's missing that special something, then accessorize with belts, jewelry, shoes, makeup, hair items, cardigans, and coats.
  3. Do your nails. Long nails are definitely in style currently. Shorter nails, also look god too. If you have the option, get your nails done. If you for any reason at all can't get your nails professionally done, try doing them yourself. If you feel insecure with your nail art, have your mom, sister, or family member do them. If no one is able to do your nails, then go natural! Whats wrong with seeing your bare nails!? If you are comfortable with it, then go ahead!
  4. Style your hair. Style your hair to complement your outfit. You can do millions of styles for the event you are going to. If you don't find any styles you like, or want to do, then you can easily curl, straighten, crimp, or tease. If you don't have access to any hair products (straightener, curler, curling wand, crimp, teasing tool, etc.), just go all natural! It can look just as beautiful, sometimes better, than any style ever would!
  5. Wearing makeup. When wearing makeup, do very light makeup. Some powder, mascara, blush, and lipstick will do just fine. Make sure your makeup isn't too dramatic, because it will seem odd to adults for youth to wear heavy eye makeup, and extreme contour.
    • Glitter has its place at formal events up until you hit High School, just don't go overboard and put it everywhere. At High School and into the beyond, try using a gentle shimmer as a highlighter instead...but be aware that any lighter/shimmery areas appear larger on film and under lights.
  6. Pick your shoes. For most girls, you want .{{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} heels. Remember, you may be dancing all night so pick up shoes you're comfortable in. Either buy cheap shoes you will not wear again but match the outfit, or buy expensive shoes that you will wear with every outfit. Shop around and look for comfort and style. You can also just choose whatever shoes you already have. If you do wear heels, set a timer to keep track of how long you wear your heels. This way you won't damage your feet.
    • Consider getting your eyebrows professionally waxed/shaped. You don't want to show up with caterpillars on your face. Getting a normal waxing routine will make it easier to be confident, and it is more feminine. Getting your eyebrows waxed every 2-3 weeks is pretty reasonable, depending on your brow color, growth speed, and how thin or thick your brows are. Just remember to keep those brows on fleek!
    • Event Day: Shower (or bathe, if you've got your hair done and don't want the water and humidity to ruin the style). Avoid using scented body-wash if you're using perfume. The two might not compliment each other. Deodorize, and make sure that it's invisible, especially if you're wearing black. If you need to pluck your eyebrows, do it at least 6 hours beforehand, otherwise you run the risk of the skin still being unsettled and red. Brush your teeth and freshen your breath.

Tips

  • Buy shoes that are comfortable.
  • Don't buy a dress you will never wear again.
  • The best time to bargain shop for semi-formal and formal dresses is in early March for semi-formals, and in late May and early Summer for Semi-formals and formals. The dresses that didn't sell from the school semi-formal dances and Prom are on sale/clearance at these times.
  • Your eyeshadow doesn't have to match your dress. Making it a separate or more vibrant color will highlight your gorgeous eyes.
    • If the formal occasion is a wedding, take a sundress or more comfortable clothes for the reception. Wearing white is usually frowned upon at weddings, so as to not upstage the bride.
  • Walk confident and smiling. This makes you more prettier than before.
  • If your wearing a black dress, try to add pops of colour in your shoes, jewelry, purse or makeup.
  • If you have a crazy/bold patterned outfit then put your hair up and away from the patterns.

Warnings

  • Ultimately, you need to be comfortable in what you're wearing. If you feel beautiful and confident, other people will be more inclined to agree.
  • Don't stress about the what if's (breaking nails or shoes, falling out hairstyles, tripping over or tearing your dress). Every little moment makes your night unique and memorable. Life is not perfect, so have fun and enjoy yourself!
  • Take a 'chill out' moment before you get out of the car, and another just before you enter the event room. Relax your shoulders, unclench your hands, and then stand up straight and tall. Shake your jitters out of your hands and smile. Everything is going to be ok.
  • Going to a tanning salon or getting a "natural" tan are bad for your health and can cause skin cancer.
