Drop In on a BMX

In order to use a half pipe correctly, you will need to drop in. Many beginners worry about this. Here's how to do it correctly.

Steps

  1. Check all your hardware. Make sure that your tires are rock solid. If they're not, pump them up. Tighten your stunt pegs to ensure that they stay on the bike. Tighten your seat to ensure you stay on the bike and tighten your handlebars so you can get a good grip on the bike. Replace your helmet if it's cracked or if it has suffered a hard knock. Even if you can't see the damage, it's there.
  2. Choose a ramp. If it's your first time, it may be easier to start with a smaller ramp, also known as a mini ramp. This way, you won't have a long way to fall if something does go wrong. Quarter or half pipe, it's your choice. Most people do their first drop in on a mini half pipe but it's whatever you're comfortable with.
  3. Clear your mind. Having the right mentality helps, tell yourself "I will clear this and if i don't, I'll retry until I do!". It's not very likely that you'll get too hurt if something goes wrong so there's nothing to worry about. You will only bail if you don't follow these steps correctly so clear your mind of all fear and worry, every biker has been here before. Imagine the rush you get when you nail the drop in. Think of all the tricks you will unlock.
  4. Roll into the ramp. Take a deep breath and roll into the ramp at a slight angle. It should be about a 45 degree angle. To be sure you pedals won't catch the coping, stand up on them and keep them straight. As you approach the coping, pick up your front tyre and place it on the ramp at a 45 degree angle. This way, your chain won't catch.
  5. Relax. Bend your knees and roll down the ramp. You won't need to pedal but don't try to restrict movement. Let it all flow. You shouldn't be worried and try to pull back, you will just fall off. The same goes for leaning forward too, you don't want to tip over. Spread out all you weight for the right and left too, you don't want to tip that way. Just relax and enjoy the ride.
