Drop in on a Half Pipe

If you want to be able to skate in a skate park, the first thing you have to learn how to do is drop in. It also helps if you know someone who skates and can help you learn and tell you what you are doing wrong.

Steps

  1. Put your board on the coping (the small metal pipe)
  2. Place your front foot lightly on the front end of the board; the best place is right on the screws.
  3. Get ready to drop in, take a deep breath, lean forward, and slam down on the front of your board, putting all of your weight on your front foot, lean forward a lot and pay attention to your balance.
  4. Note that if you drop in on your first try you are very lucky, it usually takes several tries to get it right. Don't give up, if you fall get back up and try until you get it right!

Tips

  • Just do it, don't think about it and get yourself all worked up, commit to it, and go, you'll be very proud once you've done it for the first time.
  • Do not be afraid to lean forward when you drop in. If you lean back you are more likely to fall.
  • Don't stand at the top of the ramp and look down for 10 minutes. Be confident and just go for it. Remember, the longer you stand at the top of the ramp contemplating it, the less likely you are to do it. Just think about how much you will regret not doing it.
  • It's best to try this on a small ramp first or one with a small angle as these are easiest. If you go and try to drop in on a large ramp first then you're either really bold or you're just stupid -- and boldness doesn't always pay off. And again don't be afraid.
  • Make sure you're comfortable on your board, if you're not having fun and are having trouble just skating on the ground, you're not going to be able to drop in.
  • Have fun! Don't worry about getting it right on the first try, if you're not enjoying yourself come back and try another day.
  • If you stand at the top forever it'll make it worse! And you have to lean forward even if it makes it seem scarier.
  • Practice makes perfect!
  • Try pretending that you are going to grab the nose of the board and before you know it you just learned how to drop in.
  • Don't skate when it's raining or windy, you'll most likely get hurt or if its rainy you will ruin your board.
  • Always wear pads... Or lose a leg or wear boots.

Warnings

  • There is a slight risk of making a complete fool of yourself while trying to learn to drop in, but don't worry about it, everyone has to learn sometime.
  • Skateboarding is dangerous, make sure the ramp you're skating on is safe and won't fall apart while you're going down it.
