Be a Skate Punk

There is a right way to be a skate punk, and this article can show you how. Being a skate punk is more than a look or a style, but an attitude. This sub-culture is one of the more popular punk groups, and following the instructions from this article may help you fit in as one.

Steps

  1. Style your hair. It is popular to have your hair black if you want to be punk. You can spruce it up by adding a few streaks of color or wearing your hair in an extreme fashion. You could try a mohawk or liberty spikes, but a buzz cut or really short hair works, too.
  2. Learn how to skate, if you don't already know. This is a very important step in being a skate punk. If you don't know how to skate, you may end up looking like a poser. Make sure you suck up to the local skaters who think they are better than you so they don't hassle you when you screw up on a trick.
  3. Wear skate clothes. Wear skate shirts, studded belts, and the like. Of course, to avoid being like everyone else, you could make your own clothing, or just stick to band shirts.Wear cool pants grey, dark grey, black, dark blue just makes sure you don't look to punk or to skater
  4. Get skateboarding shoes. Shoes are very important, as they can make or break your image. Some examples are:
  5. Talk about your favorite bands. Listen to what the others are listening to, and never keep up with MTV's standard artists. Also don't listen to everything other people listen to because then it will seem you can't pick out your own bands. Skate Punk as genre was sparked by Hardcore Punk of the '80s (e.g. Adolescents) but was popularized in the 1990s. Good bands to check out are Pennywise, Millencolin, Lagwagon, Satanic Surfers, Bad Religion. Also check out the forefathers of Punk: The Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Richard Hell etc.

Tips

  • Learn about the roots of Punk Rock. Know that The Ramones and The Sex Pistols started it all off, listen to them and see if you like them. If you do, that's a good start. Never fade away from the roots.
  • Never try to act like a skater if you can't skate yet the real skaters will reject you and you'll seem like a poser.
  • Learn how to skate, otherwise you would not be a skate punk.
  • Put on and Remove a Ball Cap are cool, so next time you're out, find a nice one to wear.
  • Ripped clothing is certainly acceptable from time to time, but don't rip your jeans on purpose, at least with people watching.
  • Listen to a lot of underground Find Good Punk Bands, since that's where the action is. Along with them, listen dead Kennedys, faction, black flag, gorilla biscuits, anti-flag this are some good bands but remember you don't have to listen to these bands listen to what you think is good
  • Messenger bags are great things to carry around when you're not carrying your skateboard.
  • You can watch MTV, if you would like to. There is no "You must NOT listen to MTV", but you must know that most bands on there are not real punk bands, and you most likely will get called a poseur if you like them (even though you know you're not).
  • Element makes decent boards, so load up on them. Beware though, some people hate them on the Do a Mosher on a Skateboard in a Half Pipe.
  • Accessories of spiked and studded wrist bands give off a nice rebel-ish effect, but don't overdo it.

Warnings

  • Don't stay away from what you like to listen to, if you like to listen to pop music; do it. Don't make yourself close minded because you're trying to be part of a label. But do listen to skate punk bands. Some good examples are JFA, NOFX, and The Faction. Black Flag works well too.
  • Don't be too soft, be aggressive. But don't be rude or nasty.
  • Wear a helmet when boarding; you might be made fun of, but they won't be laughing when you crack your skull open.
  • Punk is also about attitude, think what you want to think and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There is a difference between having a bit of attitude and being cocky, so watch out for that.
