Dye Your Hair With Manic Panic Hair Dye

Ever see people with wicked bright and colorful hair? Do you want to make your hair even brighter and more vibrant? Sometimes you must take the steps "on the box" to the next level. Follow these steps instead of those on the packaging and you can rock a head of Manic Panic hair at its full potential!

Steps

Lengthening the Dyeing Duration

  1. Get a jar of Manic Panic hair color. There are many choices! Pick the "Amplified" formula, which lasts 30% longer than the Classic!
  2. Section your hair. Use bobby pins or large clips for doing this.
  3. If you're worried about getting your skin dyed, cover parts of your of face and neck with hair conditioner. Keep in mind that this is a semi-permanent dye and will come off skin easily with warm water and soap or put Vaseline on your face and neck.
    • Scotch tape works well too.
    • Hair coloring smocks will easily protect the neck and clothes.
  4. Get the section of hair and apply a generous amount of dye to that area. Apply as close to the scalp as possible. (If there is any dye on the scalp, it should come out with the next shampoo.) Using a tint brush fully saturate the hair
  5. Comb all the hair that you have dyed. Stop with each section when a frothy foam is forming.
  6. Let this sit for 30-60 minutes.
  7. Blow-dry all the hair that you have dyed. Usually when your hair is done, the ends will be straw like, and the roots will be slightly saturated.
  8. Let it sit for a while. Despite what the jar says, it is best to leave the dye on as long as possible. Do not worry about Manic Panic damaging your hair, as it is all natural and vegetable based. If you can, leave it on for at least 1 to 3 hours. If you choose, you could place a shower cap or plastic bag on your hair and even sleep in it.
  9. Rinse. Use cold water, as cold as you can handle! This helps retain and lock in the color, keeping it bright and vivid longer.
    • Rinse your hair until the water is clear or only a slight tint of your color comes out and you have run it from every part of your head.
  10. Pour some vinegar throughout your hair. This rinse is optional, but if you choose to do it will condition your hair well afterwards. This will lock in the color and works wonders for making it stay!
  11. Once everything is done, towel dry and style as normal. Enjoy your funky hair!

Adding the Dye to Very Dry Hair

  1. After bleaching your hair to a pale yellow, allow it to dry. Do not put any conditioner on the hair before you add the Manic Panic––you want the hair to be as porous as possible.
    • Blow-drying and straightening can help remove a lot of moisture.
  2. Apply the Manic Panic as you normally would do. If this is a sectioning method, or however you choose to do it, you might like to mix it with some conditioner to dilute it. Put it on as if you were just conditioning your hair.
    • You can't add the conditioner to your hair first and then the color––the conditioner will cause a barrier the color cannot penetrate through as well.
  3. Allow this color to set in for hours if you have the time. You can leave it anywhere from 4-6 hours overnight. It seems to allow it to last longer, and it doesn't bleed as heavily.
  4. Wash out the hair color, but don't use shampoo. Just rinse it out. You can add conditioner if you wish but you'll probably find that it isn't necessary.
    • Let your hair just naturally air dry; you will be amazed at how soft it has became.
  5. Style as usual. Always use heat-protecting sprays if using curling irons or flat irons. Wait at least 48-72 hours before washing the hair to allow the color to lock in.
  6. After the hair dye process is completed, don't use regular shampoos. Use sulfate-free shampoo only.
    • You will also need to learn how to not wash your hair every night or day. You can train your hair to cope with being washed once a week. It is possible. It is more training yourself than the hair.
    • The hair color will last anywhere from 2 weeks to a month; Manic Panic doesn't seem to have lasting power as the other dyes (Special Effects, Punky Color). The other dyes will last upwards of two months if taken care of properly.

Tips

  • Rinse using the bathtub faucet. Rinsing in the shower can be a huge mess and you can't tell as well if the color is out.
  • You can mix in a little Manic Panic with your shampoo and conditioner, to rejuvenate your color with each wash.
  • If you are using more than one color on different sections, put the initial color where you would like, and conditioner everywhere else and then follow the steps. Repeat as needed.
  • Heat makes the dye last longer. The more heat you use during the dyeing process, the brighter and longer it will stay. Using a flat iron at some point after drying is a big help, but keep in mind a lot of heat is damaging to hair.
  • If doing streaks such as a coontail, or cheetah print, it is best to start with the lighter color, following all steps then to go back over it with the darker color.
  • The less you wash, the longer your color will stay. When you do wash, it’s best to use a color shielding shampoo/conditioner and cold water.
  • Using Manic Panic will stain skin. Use Windex to get rid of it.
  • If your hair is very dark, you'll need to lighten it first with bleach, to get a vibrant color. Some stores carry a Manic Panic "bleach-out" kit for this very purpose, but any bleach should work fine if used correctly.
  • You can use face toner to remove stains on your skin and sink top too.
  • For a beautiful pastel shade, mix three parts conditioner and one part dye together if you have a darker shade. Or two parts conditioner one part dye if you're using a light dye!

Warnings

  • Manic Panic can permanently stain fabric/tile/porcelain/etc. If you get hair-dye on the sink or floor, use toothpaste to get it out. A "magic eraser" also works.
  • Manic Panic tends to fade quickly, no matter what steps you follow. Don't be discouraged when you color starts to leave you. Grab a jar and dye it again!
  • Always make sure that you're not allergic to the product. While most people aren't, always read the ingredients, do a patch test and if you feel any discomfort, rinse out immediately.
  • Take care when sleeping with a shower cap or plastic bag on your head, as it can easily become caught over your nose and mouth. You could suffocate.
