Enjoy Biking

Steps

  1. Find a reputable bike shop. Find the local bike trail and politely stop someone and ask them. Cyclists are usually very friendly and offer to help.
  2. Research the local bike trail scene. Make sure they are in good condition and safe neighborhoods. Keep in mind where parking lots are in case of a break down.
  3. Visit your local bike shop and be honest and tell them you are a beginner. Spend quality time with your salesperson. If the salespeople ignore your questions and steer you towards most expensive models Leave! This is not a short process. Plan on several trips or at least a couple hours.
  4. After learning all about your choices start test riding. Choose entry level and mid level bikes in each category. Make sure your riding position and sizing is correct per salesperson. Notice the difference in shifting response. Always wear a helmet. Some bike shops will have same models as rentals. Take one for the weekend. The bike shop owner wants to create a relationship not a sale.
  5. Before making your final selection make sure you know what's included. It is common practice to receive free tune ups and/or discount on accessories. Ask if they have a trade in program. This will save you money and increase enjoyment.
  6. Decide how you are going to transport your new bike. The salesperson should show you all your choices. Tip: Trunk bike racks will scratch your car. If not in budget ask them to deliver.
  7. Stretch first then go out on a ride! Monitor your riding position and discomfort if any. Don't overdue it. Average speed is {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} and {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} is fine for first ride. Let your knees, back and legs get used to the exercise. Take your cell phone! Make sure you have a tool kit with tubes, tire levers and pump. Other cyclists will always help.

Tips

  • Always wear a helmet. Make sure straps are tight and front is covering your forehead. Straps should go on both sides of your ears. Look for helmets with the "rock lock system"
  • Always squeeze back brake first then front. If you squeeze front brake only it will flip you over handle bars.
  • Shifting: If front shifter in 1st gear, only use 1st-3rd gear on back
  • If front shifter in 3rd gear, you can use 4th-8th " " "
  • You will only use very low gears for steep hills. The shifting tips eliminate cross chaining.
  • Riding position: If discomfort under kneecap, your seat is to low
  • If discomfort back of leg, your seat is too high.
