Steps
- Look up different museums in your area. Finding out what kind of art they display will help you identify which ones you should approach with your own art work.
- Find out the name(s) of who you should contact at each museum. This information may be listed on the museum's website.
- Send the individual(s) an email, or call to introduce yourself and ask when a good time would be to stop by. Making an appointment with someone shows professionalism and signifies that you respect their time.
- Meet with your contact at the museum. Always be polite and take examples of your work, whether in photos or slides, etc, or even your actual paintings, installations or sculptures.
- If the museum is not interested in purchasing your art, ask if they have showings or events for you to display your artwork temporarily. Showings can provide exposure and opportunities to display your artwork to potential buyers. Remember though, museums don't generally sell their exhibits.
- Leave a good impression with the museum, even if they are not going to buy your art. Be sure to thank them for their time. The art world is small and friends are better made than enemies created.
- Be persistent and contact other museums, repeating the above steps.
Tips
- Honest critiquing needs to be done before you "put yourself out there." Community colleges are a great place to bring your work and have peers and teachers give their honest opinions.
- Attending events and openings and meeting the people who work at these institutions is always a good baby-step towards showing.
- Always show the museum your own artworks not copied artworks or someone else's
Warnings
- Do not bring work that you have learned through a TV show or some other fast paint method. No museum will give it a second glance and any honest art instructor will direct you to experiment with a classic method. Sofa art is great for your home or that of loving relatives, it is neither museum nor art gallery quality.
