Find Used Motorcycle Parts

Looking for used motorcycle parts can take a mixture of patience and luck. Motorcycle brokers are only as good as the information you give them.

Steps

  1. Write down exactly what you are looking for.
  2. Tell your supplier the exact make, model, year, engine size, colour (if appropriate to the part you are looking for)
  3. Ask what year, model etc the part he is selling was removed from.
  4. Ask what the damage to the bike was as this will give a good idea of whether the part you are looking for is likely to be damaged.
  5. Get a clear description of the condition.
  6. Ask about warranty / refund / return policy. You need to be able to send it back if it is the wrong part.
  7. Check what is included in the price (taxes, shipping, insurance etc).
  8. Negotiate. With parts that are not so popular, most bike breakers will be happy to make a sale rather than leaving it on the shelf for another six months.
  9. Pay with a credit card if possible. This will provide protection if you run into a problem later.

Tips

  • Try to get quotes from a few bike brokers to compare.
  • Check out the bike brokers, if you can, before making a purchase.
  • Get the brokers to give their address and take a look on Google maps to see if they are a genuine business or in the middle of a housing estate.

Warnings

  • There is an element of this industry that is not so honest. A lot of stolen bikes are disposed of through stripping for parts.
  • Online auctions are a cheap source of parts but most sellers are not real businesses. Beware of buying stolen parts as most bike parts are now invisibly marked and you may end up with your bike impounded.
