Find a Website's IP Address
Knowing the IP address of a website can be useful if you want to try to bypass a block on it. It can also be useful if you're setting up blocks, as blocking both the address and IP will help ensure that people can't see it. Many websites are protected by VPN services, making it difficult to determine their actual IP address.

Steps
Windows
- Open the Command Prompt. You can use the command prompt to quickly find the public IP address of any website. Note that this can only find the web-facing IP address of the site. The actual IP address of the server might be masked by a VPN or content distribution service.
- In Windows 7 and earlier, you can open the Command Prompt from the Start menu. In Windows 8 and 10, right-click on the Start button and select "Command Prompt". In any versions of Windows, you can press ⊞ Win+R and type cmd to open the Command Prompt.
- Use the PING command to find the IP address. The PING command will send a packet of data to the website you specify and return the IP address.
- Type ping Template:Var and press ↵ Enter. Replace Template:Var with the site you want to find the IP address for. You don't need to include the www. part of the address.
- Note the IP address. After performing the PING command, four packets will be sent to the website. The IP address will be listed next to each result.
- Try some alternate versions for the hidden IP. If you're after the actual IP of a website that's protected by a proxy, you may have some luck if the website has been poorly configured. Note that if the proxy or content distribution network has been properly configured, it's not possible for you to find the actual IP address. Try the following addresses to see if they aren't properly hidden:
- ping ftp.Template:Var
- ping cpanel.Template:Var
- ping mail.Template:Var
Mac
- Open the Network Utility. This tool comes installed with OS X. Its location varies depending on the version you are using. This will only find the public IP address of the site. If the site is protected by a VPN or a content distribution service, you may not be able to find the actual IP address.
- Mavericks (10.9) and earlier - You can find the Network Utility in the "Utilities" folder in your Applications directory.
- Yosemite (10.10) and later - Click the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". Click the "System Report" button and then open the Window menu from the menu bar. Select "Network Utility."
- Any version - Just type "network utility" into a Spotlight Search and it should appear at the top of the results list.
- Select the "Ping" tab. This will open the Ping section of the utility.
- Enter the address that you want to know the IP for. You don't need to include the www. portion of the address.
- Set the number of pings to "1". You'll only need one ping to determine the address.
- Click the "Ping" button to send the data packet. The display will show the IP address of the website after 64 bytes from.
- Try pinging other services to find the hidden IP. Many websites are hidden behind a proxy service, which makes finding their actual IP difficult, if not impossible. If the proxy is not properly configured to protect all of the website's services, you may be able to find the actual IP address. Try pinging the following addresses to see if you can find the actual address:
- ftp.Template:Var}}
- cpanel.Template:Var}}
- mail.Template:Var}}
- Ping with the Terminal. Like Windows, you can use the command line to perform the ping command to find IP addresses. You can find the Terminal in the Utilities folder.
- Type ping Template:Var and press ⏎ Return.
- Press Ctrl+C to stop the ping command from running, as it will run continuously.
- Note the website's IP address. It will be displayed after 64 bytes from.
iOS
- Download an app that can ping websites. There are several apps that allow you to ping websites. You can get these apps for free from the App Store. Some of the more popular apps include:
- Network Ping Lite
- Ping - network reachability test
- Fing - Network Scanner
- Open the app and select the "Ping" function. Most apps come with several network utilities. Select "Ping" from the app's main menu.
- Type the address you want to ping. Enter in the website address that you want to determine the IP for. You don't need to include the www. portion of the address.
- Tap "Start" or "Ping" to begin pinging the site. You should see the results start to appear in the readout.
- If you can't reach the site, make sure that you've typed the name correctly.
- Stop the ping. You'll only need to ping once to see the IP address of the site. Stop the ping process so you aren't hammering the site's servers.
- Note the website's IP address. It will be displayed in the readout section of the app. If the website is protected by a VPN or content distribution network, you won't be able to see the real IP address.
Android
- Download "Android Terminal Emulator" from the Google Play Store. This free app gives you a Terminal that you can use to perform system commands on, including the ping command.
- Launch the Android Terminal Emulator app. You'll be greeted with a traditional Unix terminal interface.
- Type .ping c1 Template:Var and press the "Enter" button on your Android keyboard. The terminal will send a single ping to the address you entered. You can change c1 to any number to indicate how many pings you want to send, but you'll only need one to find the IP address.
- Note the IP address. You'll see the website's IP address in the terminal after running the ping command. If the website is protected by a VPN or content distribution network (and most are), you won't be able to find the real IP address.
Tips
- If you type the IP address into the address bar of a web browser, it will go to the site, sometimes bypassing filters.
- This value can be used to bypass website blocks, create website blocks, and a lot more.
