Find the Right Aftermarket Auto Part

Do you know how to select the correct aftermarket auto part for your vehicle? What is your vehicle's engine configuration? If you don't know, then you are going to have a difficult time finding the right parts for your vehicle. This article will guide you through finding the right aftermarket auto parts.

Steps

  1. If you plan to repair the vehicle yourself, purchase a repair manual from your local auto parts store, along with a manufacturers repair manual. I use both. eBay is a good place to start.
  2. Locate your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and familiarize yourself with the application of each character. You can locate your vehicle's VIN number on the driver's side door jam, or look at the lower right side of your windshield from the outside, if it's a car.....
  3. Locate the part number of the part in question.
  4. Select your vendor. There are several ways to purchase OEM parts or an aftermarket replacement part. Your local dealership is a start for your OEM part, however, purchasing a part at the dealership is quite costly.
    • Search for the part utilizing the online auto parts stores by the part number.
    • Search the internet by the part number, and the part name.
    • Search by the year, make, the model of the vehicle, engine size, and the part number. ex. 1990 Ford E-150 XL 5.8L Part number D5TZ-9E453-A, or instead of the part number, enter OEM parts.
    • Register, and utilize the online forums for assistance.
    • Check with your local salvage yards.
  5. Talk to your mechanic. If you are not familiar with your vehicle's specifications, talking to your regular mechanic is a good idea. They can tell you details about your vehicle that are very important to remember, should you need to purchase replacement parts.
  6. Find a reputable online auto parts store. It is very helpful if they have an online catalog, where parts are listed by make, model, and year. It can also give you an idea of the things you will need to know about your vehicle before you purchase your parts.
  7. Look up your vehicle online. Knowing the make, model, and year of your vehicle can help you learn much about your vehicle. It may also help to know the number of liters and cylinders for your engine.
  8. Search for parts. If you find the part that you are looking for online, double-check with your mechanic before making a purchase. Your mechanic can also advise you of things to watch out for, to ensure that the part you purchase is right for your car, as well as a good buy.

Tips

  • If you are unsure if the part will fit your vehicle, call your dealer or your mechanic.

Warnings

  • This does not guarantee the selection of the correct parts. There are always external factors, such as catalogue errors that may inhibit the correct part selection.
