Fold a Dollar Into a Heart

Fold a dollar note into a heart and keep it in your wallet or give it to a special friend as a keepsake to remember a fun outing spent together. A $20 bill can be used instead to make a cute gift for family and friends when you want to add a personal touch.

Steps

  1. Start with a dollar bill in good condition. (Or use a $5, $10, $20, note instead––see Tips for other currencies.) Fold the bottom right corner diagonally.
  2. Unfold the corner. Then fold the top right corner diagonally.
  3. Unfold the corner. You should see that the creases form an X. Fold the right side of the bill backwards over the middle of the X.
  4. Unfold it. Push the middle creases in and let the corners collapse down.
  5. Repeat with the left side.
  6. Fold the whole bill in half. Then unfold.
  7. Pinch the middle section along the crease you made in the previous step. Bring the edges of each triangle together. This will create a rectangular flap in the back. Flatten it to the right, as shown.
  8. Flip the bill over.
  9. Fold the top flap down. Tuck the corners in.
    • Hint: at this point you should have a single pair of tabs, folded on the diagonal, pointing up. You should have three layers of folded tabs pointing down.
    • Still not sure? Start with a $1 bill and follow the markings on the bill to show you the correct orientation.
  10. Flip the bill over.
  11. Fold the bottom right corner to the middle.
  12. Unfold and flatten the corner down.
  13. Fold the bottom corner towards the middle crease.
  14. Unfold and flatten the corner down.
  15. Repeat with other corner.
  16. Repeat with the other three points.
  17. Fold the right and left corners back.
  18. Insert a quarter or other coin in the middle if desired.

Tips

  • If you don't have any U.S. currency, you'd like a different color, or you want to give one to someone without giving them your money, start with a rectangular piece of paper about the same size: 6.6cm (2.61 inches) wide, by 15.6cm (6.14 inches) long. A paper cutter, if you have access to one, can help you get the edges square.
  • This may also be possible with other currencies. A £5 or £10 British note will work, with the omission of step #7. Check the size of the alternative currency note's size against the measurements in the previous tip.
  • This is best folded on a flat surface.

Warnings

  • Doing this to a bill will make it harder to use in a vending or self-checkout machine.
  • Take care with the bill to avoid ripping it.

Things You'll Need
