Force Windows Explorer to Start in the Folder You Want
When you open Windows Explorer, you can set it to open, every time, in any folder that you select.
Steps
- Right click on the Yellow folder icon; this will open up new options. Right click on "Windows Explorer" then click on "Properties".
- In the Target field, type the path of the directory that you want to link to.
- In this example, we have set "D:\Movies" as the target directory.
- The main directory is the "C:\" drive by default. If you have an extra drive or partition, the drive letter is usually "D:\" onwards. To make sure, view your intended target directory in the "Computer" folder.
- Click on "OK."
- To see the change, open the Windows Explorer icon. Finished! Your pre-set directory will now open by default when you click on Windows Explorer!
- "D:\Movies" will now open as the default directory whenever the Windows Explorer icon is clicked.
Tips
- Note: Windows Explorer won't open into the folder you want it to open into, when you start Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the Start button. You will need to make any of these modifications to a shortcut to the Windows Explorer program (called EXPLORER.EXE) You can place such a shortcut on your desktop (or you can put it in the Start button) and then when you use this shortcut the path you specified will work.
- To launch Windows Explorer so that it points to the Desktop use this string in the Target field: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,%USERPROFILE%\Desktop
- Tip: If you want to have Explorer start at My Computer, without drive and folder branches initially expanded, in the string mentioned above you replace the part ( /e, d:\myfolder ) with this instead: /n, /e, /select, c:\
