Get Dog Urine Smell out of Carpets

Is your dog still going on the floor? Getting dog urine out of your carpet doesn't have to be hard, but you'll need to act quickly. Dog urine that is allowed to dry will not only stain the carpet, but will make it easier for harmful bacteria to start multiplying. The following are ways to get dog urine odor out of the carpet to prevent future repeat incidents.

Steps

Club Soda

  1. Sprinkle club soda over the dog urine location.
  2. Dab the sponge where you poured the club soda. Be sure to use dabbing motions which pick up the urine, rather than rubbing motions which will push the urine deeper into the carpet.
  3. Dab with a paper towel and or rag to pull up the moisture from the carpet.
  4. Take an air freshener and spray around the area.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

  1. Mix a solution of one part water with one part white vinegar. Vinegar works against the ammonia smell in the urine and is a natural cleaner.
  2. Pour or spray the vinegar solution onto the carpet where the urine is. Let the vinegar solution soak for 10 minutes or longer.
  3. Dab up the vinegar solution with a sponge or paper towel and begin to let dry.
  4. When the vinegar solution is almost dry, sprinkle a bit of baking soda onto the wet spot on the carpet. Baking soda is a time-tested odor absorber. Let stand for approximately 15 minutes.
  5. After 15 minutes, vacuum up the baking soda. The dog urine should be completely removed from the carpet.

Peroxide and Detergent

  1. Use a solution of one part white vinegar and water to cover the urine stain completely.
  2. Sprinkle the vinegar solution with a layer of baking soda. Baking soda is an odor neutralizer.
  3. Mix a solution of a hydrogen peroxide and dish detergent. Take about a half cup of peroxide and mix it with a spoonful of dish detergent. If using on a light-colored carpet, be sure to use a colorless dish detergent.
    • Only use 3% hydrogen peroxide solution; any higher solution of hydrogen peroxide is medical-grade and may be too strong for a carpet, causing bleaching.
    • Perform a spot test on a small part of the carpet in an inconspicuous area. Do this before covering the urine stain with the solution, just in case.
  4. Spray or pour a small amount of the hydrogen peroxide solution onto the baking soda and work it into the carpet with a soft brush.
  5. Let the stain dry completely.
  6. Vacuum up any remaining baking soda.

Tips

  • Use a black light to find urine stains that have already dried on carpets.
  • When the dog urinate on the carpet or floor, don't hit them. Instead put them outside.

Warnings

  • If the dog was potty trained and is now urinating, you may want to get them checked out at the vet clinic.
