Get Into Cycling

You have seen them on the street, on dirt paths and trails, going up hill and downhill. They have been around for a couple of centuries, some go very fast and others slower to the music of the scenery... It's time to get into cycling!

Steps

  1. Observe cycling in your area or local community.
    • Who is cycling?
    • What are they cycling on and how are they dressed? Go to a park, go to the beach, go to a near by school or college and notice the different styles.
  2. Ask a cyclist some basic questions. Where do they like to ride in your area? Where did they get their bike and why they like it?
    • Ask for recommendations on local bike shops. Why did they recommend the bike shops - was it helpful sales or service or both?
  3. Browse biking reading materials. Do they have a bike maps and books section? Glance at some magazines and other helpful material to formulate any questions you may have.
  4. Pick a bike shop with care.
    • Not all bike shops are the same. Some have different sales and service agendas. Find one that speaks to you and listens to your questions. Don't be in a hurry unless you know what you want.
    • Spend a few minutes observing other customers in the bike shop. What are they doing? How are their requests being handled.
    • Talk with someone in sales and someone different in service. Are they interested in speaking with you and do they sound knowledgeable.
    • Ask about factory warranties and guarantees in addition to any bike shop return policies.
  5. Always ask to try a bike out before you buy. Allow at least 20-30 minutes to get a good idea how it rides, steers, and brakes or stops for you. Everyone's riding experience is different.
