Get Married in Court

When you have found the love of your life and you want to spend the rest of your lives with one another, it may be that time to get married. If you and you loved one have decided to tie the knot at the Courthouse, this is the article for you.

Steps

  1. Go to your local courthouse and register for a marriage license. This will require a small fee that varies from state to state (for example Nebraska's is $15). If you plan to marry at the courthouse you will need to pick a judge and a date, there is also a fee for this (example - Nebraska's can vary from $50-100). Obtaining the marriage license can take from 1/2 hour up to two weeks, but this is also dependent upon the state in which you are filing.
  2. After you have received your marriage license, and have arranged for judge, a time, and a court, you also need to make sure you have two witnesses. Your witnesses must be legal adults at least 18 years of age.
  3. Purchase Buy a Wedding Ring if desired.
  4. Now that the legalities are in place, time to plan for the fun stuff. What are you going to wear? Remember this is a day that will last a lifetime so even if it's on a budget wear your nicest outfit or go to the store and find something affordable that will make you feel awesome. Maybe get your nails and hair done, even if it is by a friend or family member, this is your day and you have the right to feel special.
  5. Plan for flowers and pictures. Flowers will make it feel whole. From getting a special bouquet, to picking out your favorite rose at the local grocery store, or making a bouquet with a ribbon and flowers from your garden not matter the price it will be nice. Also, make sure you have at least one person there to get a snapshot(s) of your special day.

Tips

  • Don't forget the after "I Do's" - where do the two of you want to go? Maybe, go out to eat with those who shared with you in this special moment. Maybe, a nice romantic dinner at home or picnic in the park. If your budget permits, a night at hotel can add a bit of fun.
  • If you don't live in the U.S. look carefully at the practicalities of getting married in Court. The steps above do not apply universally.
  • Indulge a bit, maybe some massage oils, a bottle of wine/champagne, chocolate. No wedding in court is complete without one of these at least, in the opinion of some.
  • Request your guests, if you have any, pay the marriage service the respect it deserves by turning off cell phones.

Warnings

  • Make sure you are getting married with love and joy in your hearts, and to make sure that you hold on to that love and happiness even in stressful times. Remember that's why you have them, to have and to hold and lean on in times of need. Congratulations and may your marriage be one of everlasting love and happiness!
  • Don't skimp on the reception due to a lack of money. You can always have friends and family gather at your favorite bar, or have a nice outdoor BBQ, or picnic at a local park. If you don't want to have it now, you can always have a delayed reception - even if it is a year later.
