Get Microsoft Points

Microsoft Points used to be the form of currency for the Xbox Live store, but Microsoft has recently transitioned to using your local currency instead. This means that Microsoft Points are no longer available from official retailers, although old cards can still be redeemed. Instead, you can buy gift cards in your local currency and add that amount to your account. You can find these gift cards at most major retailers, or you can add money to your account directly from your Xbox or the Microsoft Store website.

Steps

Redeem a Points or Gift Card

  1. Purchase a card. You can still redeem Xbox Points, so you can purchase Points cards or Gift Cards loaded with a preset amount. Cards are available in a wide range of values in your local currency. Points cards can still be obtained from a variety of retailers as well, though no new ones are being made.
    • Points will be redeemed into their equivalent value in your local currency.
    • Points that are converted to your local currency will expire in one year.
  2. Sign into your Xbox Live account. Ensure that you are logged into the account that you want to redeem the card for. See this guide for details on logging into Xbox Live.
  3. Open the Guide menu. Press Xbox Guide button on your controller, and then select the "Games & Apps" tab.
  4. Redeem the code. Select the "Redeem Code" button and enter the code from the back of the Gift Card or the code you received via email when purchasing online. If the code is entered correctly, the amount will appear in your Xbox account.
    • You can also redeem the code online at live.xbox.com/en-US/RedeemCode

Tips

  • You can get Microsoft Points even if you don't have a credit card. Simply purchase a prepaid gift card at a retail store and use it to pay for your points the same way that you would use a credit card.
  • Apart from add-ons and virtual products for Xbox games you can also use your points to buy new games, TV shows and videos that can be played directly through your Xbox console.

Warnings

  • Never share your Windows Live username and password or leave your account logged in when not in use.
