Get a High Score on Flappy Bird

Odds are that you have heard about this app for Android and iPhone, loved and loathed by many. Achieving a high score in this notoriously tricky game is somewhat of a notable achievement....but you can do it! Just see Step 1 below to get started.

Steps

Setting Up The Game

  1. Download the app. The original Flappy Bird game has unfortunately been revoked by its creator after he received a large amount of harassment about the game. While it is no longer available for new players, you can download any one of a number of clones. This can be done through the app store, Android market or Google play.
    • Some notable clones include: Silly Bird, Flappy Fish, Flappy Hipster,Fly bird ,Tappy Nyan, and Flappy Bert (from Sesame Street)!
    • You can also download the original game, but you will have to find it on the internet and install it manually. Just be sure to use a reputable website!
    • The creator has recently stated that he will someday bring the game back to official channels, but that that will not happen any time soon.
  2. Eliminate any potential distractions. This game will require immense concentration if you wish to achieve a high score. This can entail the removal of pets from the room, lowering of music volumes or not sitting on an aisle seat whilst playing on a bus, for example.
    • However, everybody has their own methods to increase levels of focus. Try experimenting with various external factors to find what suits you best.

Playing the Game

  1. Practice. Play several games and try to score as high as possible, getting used to the game's speed and techniques.
  2. Get used to the game's physics. The flappy bird will move down quite quickly. It's crucial to get used to the way the game moves in order to play well. After a while, you'll discover that the game seems more predictable.
  3. Take note of the ways in which you keep dying. For example, if you keep flying too high, try to fly lower next time. In other words, learn from your mistakes and make corrections each time.
  4. Keep low. Try to tap just before you reach the top part of the bottom pipe. Your best bet for survival is to get as far into the width of the pipe so that when you tap again, it reduces the odds of you hitting the bottom of the top pipe.
  5. Wait until the last minute to tap. However, be attentive. Be sure to wait until the first possible second to tap, as you will then be less likely to hit the top of pipes or fly too high. However, not paying close attention and waiting too long will likely cause you to hit the pipe.
  6. Get into a rhythm. Once you start getting at least a score of 10, get into a rhythm. Begin to memorize how the flappy bird flies at each tap; having or developing good spatial awareness is of great benefit here.
  7. Try again! Once you have a high score, don't stop. Try to beat your high score. Play against others––competing with your friends is a great motivation to do better.

Tips

  • Don't look at your score you'll be tempted and when you see your at a high score you'll keep looking! Try to forget there is a score at all.
  • Get in a comfy position before starting a level. Being in the middle of a game and having an itch, or a cramp from being in a bad position can be annoying and distracting.
  • Just keep playing! Even though your scores are low, your skills will improve over time.
  • Relax, if you're too tense you'll end up losing.
  • Tap on the left side so that the view of the pipes are not obscured by your finger.
  • Disconnect from the internet to avoid displaying the adverts—these can be distracting.
  • If you feel that the in-game sound effects are a nuisance, try lowering the game's volume or put it on mute.
  • Lagging and irregular pauses in the game can often hinder your rhythm and timing. If this occurs, try closing some of the apps that you are not using and see if that solves the problem. If the game still isn't running smoothly, try restarting your device. You can always search around the web for other solutions or play the game as it stands. Or, if you have a friend who plays Flappy Bird, ask if you can play it on their phone instead.

Warnings

  • Dying in this game can be somewhat stressful. Just remember that it's only a game.
  • It's best to take a break from playing every 30 minutes or so just to allow your mind to rest a little.
