Get the URL for Pictures

If you've ever seen a picture on the Internet that you liked but couldn't figure out how to link, fear not! It's pretty simple to extract the URL from an online image. You can then link to it anywhere on your blog, forum post, email, and more.

Steps

Getting the URL of Images Found Online

  1. Find the picture for which you want to get the address. You can get the address for most images you find online.
  2. Make sure you're viewing the original version of the image. Some websites will display a thumbnail instead of the whole image. If you get the URL now, you'll only be getting the URL for the thumbnail. Make sure the full-size image is loaded in your browser.
    • For example, the images in this article article are actually thumbnails. To see the full-size version, you'd need to click the image to open the full-size version in a new window.
  3. Right-click (computer) or press and hold (mobile) the image. Once you've found the image that you want to get the URL for, right-click on it if you're using a computer or press and hold on it if you're using a mobile device.
    • If you're using a Mac with a one-button mouse, hold Ctrl and click the image to open the right-click menu.
    • If you can't right-click the image, Get-the-URL-for-Pictures.
  4. Select the "Copy Image Address" option. The wording for this option will change depending on the browser you are using:[1]
    • Chrome (computer) - "Copy image address"
    • Chrome (mobile) - "Copy image URL"
    • Internet Explorer - "Copy"
    • Safari (iOS) - "Copy" (Note: This only works if the image is not a link. If the image is a link to another page, you cannot get the URL using Safari for iOS)
    • Safari (OS X) - "Copy image address"
    • Firefox - "Copy Image Location"
  5. Paste the image URL. Once you've copied the image URL, it will be copied to your device's clipboard. You can then paste it anywhere you'd like, such as a message, document, or a browser's address bar. If you copy something else before pasting it, the copied URL will be overwritten with whatever you copied last.

Uploading Images and Getting a URL

  1. Decide on an image uploading service. If you need to give one of your images a URL, you can upload it to an image hosting website and then copy the newly-created address. This guide will focus on using Imgur, as it is one of the easier options and does not require an account. There are a variety of free image hosting options available, including:
    • Imgur
    • Flickr
    • TinyPic
    • Shutterfly
  2. Click the "Upload images" button. If you're using Imgur, this is located at the top of the page.
  3. Add the images that you want to upload. You can browse your computer for images, click and drag them into the window, or paste them from your clipboard.
    • If you're using the Imgur app on your mobile device, you'll need to create an account first.
  4. Click the "Start Upload" button. The images will be uploaded from your computer to the Imgur website.
  5. Find the "Share this Image" sidebar. Click the "More" link to expand it.
  6. Copy the "Direct Link" address. This is the address that will lead directly to the image you uploaded. You can then send, share, and embed this link however you'd like.

Finding the Image URL on Advanced Websites

  1. Open the website in Chrome or Safari. If you can't right-click the image, it is likely protected by advanced coding. To find the address, you'll need to use the developer tools included in Chrome or Safari to try to find the address. You can also do this with Firefox if you have the Firebug extension installed.
  2. Open the developer tools. Press Ctrl+ Shift+I/ Command+ Shift+I to open the Web Inspector. This will open in a new frame in the browser, and display the website's code.
    • You can quickly find the entry you need by right-clicking on the image and selecting "Inspect."
  3. Find the entry that highlights the image. As you scroll through the code for the site, you'll see different elements get highlighted. Find the section that highlights the image that you want to copy.
  4. Look for the image address in the "Styles" section. If you hover your mouse cursor over the link, you'll see a preview. Look for the link that leads to the image for which you want to find the address.
  5. Right-click the link and select "Copy link address." This will copy the image URL to your clipboard. you can test it by pasting it into a new tab in your browser.

Tips

  • If you want to use an image created by somebody else, get their permission and make sure to credit them next to the picture, or else you could have a lawsuit on your hands.
