Get to Facebook at School

Many schools restrict students from accessing sites like Facebook, but it might still be possible to get in, depending on how much they've blocked. This article will show you how to alter the settings with your own computer, a mobile phone, or using proxy websites. You can also try to do it using a school computer, though it may not work if your system administrator really wants Facebook blocked.

Steps

Using Your Own Computer

  1. Connect to your school's internet. You have two options:
    • If you notice that the computers are plugged into the wall with ethernet cables (like those that are used on telephone landlines), simply unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into your computer.
    • If your school has open WiFi, connect to that. If not, you might need to figure out the wireless network password.
  2. Set up a proxy IP address. You can use either of the methods described above, if you have a Mac or a PC, or you can use one of the Web-based proxies listed below.
  3. Remember to disconnect. When you're finished, unplug or log off the wireless network.

Tethering Your Mobile Phone

  1. Use your data plan. If you have a cell phone that has internet access, you can use it to access the internet while still on a school computer.
  2. Enable your cell phone's bluetooth signal. Where you will find this will depend on the phone, but it should be listed under Settings or Connectivity.
  3. Get your school computer to recognize your phone.
    • On a PC: Click Start, then Control Panel. Click Printers and Other Hardware, then Bluetooth Devices. Click Add and follow the instructions to tether your phone.
    • On a Mac: Click the little bluetooth icon in the upper right corner of the screen (should look like a spiky B). Make sure Bluetooth is on, then select Browse Device, and click your cell phone.
  4. Browse Facebook via your phone's internet connection.

Using a School Computer (Microsoft Windows)

  1. Obtain a proxy server Internet Protocol (IP) address. These can typically be found by searching online for free or public proxy servers.
  2. Click the "Start" button in the bottom left corner of your screen followed by "Control Panel" from the Start menu.
  3. Click “Network and Internet.”
  4. Click “Internet Options.”
  5. Click the “Connections” tab in the Internet Options window.
  6. Click the "LAN settings” button within the Connections tab.
  7. Click the “Use a proxy sever for your LAN” checkbox.
  8. Enter the proxy server IP address you’ve obtained in the “Address” input field within the Proxy Server section of the Connections tab.
  9. Click the “OK” button to complete the process.
  10. Navigate to the Facebook website using your web browser of choice.

Using a School Computer (Apple Mac OS X)

  1. Obtain a proxy server IP address. These can typically be found by searching online for free or public proxy servers.
  2. Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen followed by the “System Preferences…” option from the context menu.
  3. Click the “Network” option from the Internet & Wireless section of the System Preferences window.
  4. Select the network you are currently using from the list of networks in the left hand side pane. Note: The network you are currently connected to will have a green light beside it.
  5. Click the “Advanced…” button in the bottom right corner of the window.
  6. Select the proxy protocol you wish to use from the “Select a protocol to configure:” pane on the left. (In this example we will use the “Web Proxy” option.)
  7. Enter the IP address of the proxy server in the input field to the right. Some proxies will also require a username and password.
  8. Click the “OK” button to return to the Network pane.
  9. Click the “Apply” button in the bottom right corner to complete the process.
  10. Navigate to the Facebook website using your web browser of choice.

Using Proxies Within Your Browser
