Steps
- Start with a professional haircut to give yourself the best possible starting point for long, healthy hair.
- Wash and condition your hair as little as you can. The longer you go without having wet, easily stretched and snapped hair shafts the better! Concentrate shampooing on your scalp and conditioning on the ends. Trim off splits when your hair shows evidence of them. There is no need to trim regularly unless you get splits, but if they do appear get rid of them!
- Using any heat products is not recommended. If you have to use a hair dryer, use protective products. In general, it is best to avoid hot rollers, curling irons, or dryers because they will damage hair and make long hair less attractive over time. Consider washing your hair at night and letting it air-dry instead. Use the cool setting rather than the hot.
- At night you can either braid your hair or carefully wrap your head in a silk scarf. There is no need to use hair ties, but if you do use ones without a metal part.
- Oil your hair with coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. Only do this step if your hair is damaged in some way. This step will not make your hair grow.
- Consider dyeing your hair with henna rather than with commercial dye. This won't make your hair grow and is only recommended for people who want to dye while they're growing it out and don't want to damage it with commercial dyes.

- Finished.
Tips
- Areas of your life such as diet, exercise, hours of sleep, and stress affect hair growth. Healthy habits will promote healthy hair -- eat well and drink lots of water, any change should show in about 6-8 weeks on your hair.
- Never let anyone pressure you into cutting your hair off for a charitable organisation. Many of these organisations aren't actually charitable , or even a scam! If you cut your hair you can sell it on places like www.thehairtrader.com and donate the money to charity but don't feel pressured to. It's your hair, your hard work -- tell anyone who pressures you to donate some blood or bone marrow!
- Regular haircuts are not necessary, but if your hair 'tugs' when you brush out the ends, it's probably a good time for a trim.
- Since your hair is already coarse, try not to put a lot of heat on your hair. If you use a flat iron try not to blow dry your hair.
- If you don't know how to do a hot oil treatment in your hair, ask for help and/or read directions. You can even try just putting a few drops of coconut or extra-virgin olive oil on your ends! You can even use jojoba, avocado oil, the list is endless...but CO and EVOO are the best as they mimic most closely the natural oil from your hair.
- Don't put gel or hairspray with alcohol in your hair, as it will have a drying effect. If you need to use product, do your research as to what chemicals are abrasive or solvents. Plain 100% aloe vera gel can be used instead of gel.
- If you must comb wet hair, do it gently with a wide-tooth comb. Comb out the bottom of each lock first and work toward the top. You can do this while your hair is laden with conditioner. It is much better not to.
- Throw out any brushes with the little balls on the end of the bristles, they just damage the hair!
- Remember, oil treatments won't replenish the moisture in your hair, they protect more from being lost. The best way to do hair masks is to soak your head in the tub for about a half-hour, then let it dry halfway and put the oil in.
Warnings
- Never take advice from someone whose hair is very different from yours.
- Avoid curling irons and straightening irons. If you use a hot tool always use a heat protecting product. Straightening and curling hair always damages it -- you are pressing the moisture out of the hair shaft and nothing can replenish this. Your hair will split faster and take longer to grow if you use heat treatment.
- 'Chemicals' are not the devil! Everything is made of 'chemicals,' learn the lingo of good hair care and decide whether you should be using 'cones' or 'SLS' or not. There is no right answer, and handling matters much more than product in most cases.
