Hack Minesweeper

While the Minesweeper game is included in almost every Windows computer, few know how to play it, and others have no idea how to win. This article will explain to play, and almost never lose.

Steps

To Detect if there is a Mine

  1. Open Minesweeper and select the window.
  2. Type 'xyzzy'.
  3. Tap the [SHIFT] key.
  4. Hover your mouse over the mine field.
  5. Look closely to find a very tiny white square on the far top left of your desktop screen, it should be about 1 pixel in size. A white pixel will denote a mines presence.

To Edit the Scores

  1. Search for the file "winmine.ini"
  2. Open this file using Notepad
  3. You will see entries for best times. Edit those entries, modifying the names and the times to reflect your times!

Notes:

  • This step will be soon obsolete due to the small percentage of computers running on Windows 9x and earlier. You do not have to perform these steps since it cannot be done on the Windows NT based operating systems (Windows 2000 and later) anyway.
  • This this step is only available to Windows versions prior to Windows XP.

To Make A Wrapped Field

  1. Open Minesweeper and select the window.
  2. Reset all the scores.
  3. Now make all of the high scores WRAPFIELD.
  4. Right click on Mr. Smiley.
  5. Now his face is red.
  6. Now the field is all connected so a 1 on a wall could also mean a mine on the opposite side.

Tips

  • Remember that this some of these hacks have been fixed in later versions of Windows, especially the version found on Windows 7; so they might not work anymore.
  • The numeral values such as time1, time2, and time3 are in hexadecimal by default. Put them in decimal to see what they will appear as in the best times.
  • It works best if your computer's background is Grey (relevant steps: Change a Computer's Desktop Wallpaper.)
