Have Your Windows Tinted

In hot and sunny climates, tinted windows can increase both your comfort level and your energy efficiency by drastically reducing the temperature inside your car when the sun is out. Even in temperate and cool climates, some people want have their windows tinted for reasons of privacy or simple style. Although you can buy cheap window tint kits at some auto supply stores, you will get much better results from a professional installation.

Steps

  1. Understand the laws about window tint in your state. Some states set a maximum limit to how dark you can tint windows, and on what windows you are allowed any tint at all. You can find this information with your state motor vehicles division, or by calling any auto detailing shop that offers tinting services.
    • Window tint darkness is measured as a percentage, listing the percentage of light the tint allows to pass through the window. A 20-percent tint allows 20 percent of the visible light to pass through.
    • Laws in most states differentiate between different windows, most often allowing a darker tint in rear windows but requiring lighter or clear windshields, front driver's side windows and front passenger's side windows.
  2. Consider the colors of tint available and the color of your car. You can go with various degrees of dark black/gray, or opt for more colorful--and even reflective--tints. You might want to use a photo editing program and a picture of your car to work out the best color scheme for your tint job.
    • The percentage of your tint will also affect the visible color of the job. Keep the law in mind while choosing colors.
  3. Contact auto detailing shops in your local area. Shop them as you would any service: by price, reputation, turn-around speed and how soon they can get you in for an appointment.
    • If you have a mechanic or auto body shop you trust, you can ask for an opinion. Most people in the industry have a good sense about who does the best work in your area.
  4. Schedule your appointment, and get your car in. This can take several hours to a day or so. Your best bet is to have transportation to your other plans rather than waiting for the work to be done.

Warnings

  • Tinted windows can lower the temperature in your car when it's hot, but not enough that it's safe to leave an animal or baby alone inside. Never leave your pets or small children unattended in a car, even for a few moments.
  • Avoid opening your windows for the first week after you get the tint job. Although the tinting should be fine, it takes a little while for it to "set." The stress of rolling into and out of your door can mar the tint job.
