Hide Things in Your Room

Stop those pesky siblings/parents/other snoopers from finding your goodies. Especially handy for hiding things in a shared room. This article describes how to conceal items.

Steps

  1. Remember a good hider is creative. Look around your room for creative hiding places. Innocent looking things are usually best. Note that sock drawers, back of wardrobes and shoe boxes are quite obvious to someone who is looking. Perhaps try looking in someone else's room for stuff and think about where you look.
  2. Make sure your hiding places are not incredibly complicated to get to. People are going to ask questions if, say, a series of loud thumps are coming from your room and that is immediately accompanied by you sneaking off every Tuesday afternoon. Creativeness must have boundaries.
  3. Be uncomplicated - don't make it so that you can't find it again. Try to make it something you'll remember... maybe you could write it down if you had to, but then there's the whole hiding the piece of paper...
  4. Don't place anything you wish to hide near anything that's around/in used heaps. That is just a bad idea.

Hiding Small Objects

  1. Remnants of childhood are good places to start. For instance - your Grandmother made you a sewing basket when you were four? Hide your money in there! There's a bunch of children's books in your bookcase? Chuck all secret notes between the pages! A jewelry box you painted when you were six? Hide small candies or money in it! You can even hollow out a big book and hide stuff in there! Here are some other good places people might think to look, but wouldn't expect you to hide stuff there;
    • Vents (just make sure the stuff won't burn and start a fire when the heater goes on.) Also be careful of dust.
    • If you have a box of unused stuffed animals, use that!
  2. Phones. If you have a cell phone with a cover on it, that could be a great hiding place. Just put anything thin like money or notes in between the back of the phone and the cover.
    • Inside of your desk, behind the drawers.
  3. Another good place for hiding small items is in battery compartments and/or other things like that. For instance, most game systems such as Play Station 2 (the thick one) and Game Cubes have places that open up. You can put things in them.
  4. If you want your room to seem normal, you can hide secret items such as notes or letters or candy in places like inside a picture frame behind the picture, inside the pocket of an old jacket in your closet, or in a fake trash can. If you have an old board game box, you can throw away the stuff inside it and hide your things in there.
  5. You can also use your radio. This works if you have one that is plugged into the wall, but one that runs on batteries can do just as well. Most of these either take a few large batteries or many smaller ones. Just take the battery cover off and put whatever small thing you need to hide in there, then close the battery cover back up. Be careful in case you might need to use the radio on batteries. If you know when it'll need to be on batteries, move your stuff prior to use. Also, if it's a hard object, it may rattle inside should the radio be moved. This can arouse suspicion. To test, put the object in, and close it up, then shake the radio a little. If you hear any noise, take the object out and wrap it in some tissue or cloth or something similar, and then replace it in there. Or if you have an old one that doesn't work, take out the insides and place your item in there and then screw the back on again but make sure you don't take off the buttons, otherwise it will be obvious!
  6. A great place to hide something small is to get a waterproof container, available at any dive shop or online. Then bury it in your fish tank, assuming you have one. No one would think to look in your fish tank with all your fish around. Plus there is no chance of any smells getting out for someone to discover. You can also hide rolled up notes in an empty lipstick.

Hiding Big Objects

  1. Look under your desk if it has a wide bottom. Lay on the ground and push it up with your feet and you will see a pretty spacious hiding place in there. Just make sure that if you ever move it when your parents are there, you put the stuff in an alternative hiding place beforehand.
  2. Try hiding things under your bed. Get a bed skirt in order to keep the bottom of your bed hidden from passersby.
  3. Hide things in the back of your closet.
  4. Underneath the bottom drawer of a nightstand might work if yours has all four sides reaching the ground.

Tips

  • While you might be tempted to hide things in many different places (in case one spot gets found), having several hiding places will also increase the probability of one of your items being found. Try to keep it to about 3 places, with an equal amount of whatever you're hiding in each.
  • If you share a room, make sure your roommate won't be looking around the spot you chose.
  • If you have a really old bathrobe or jacket hung up in your closet, you can stash things in the pockets.
  • For very small, dry things, take the cover off your light switch, and put it in there, then replace the cover.
  • Hiding things in pillowcases is usually not that effective. Not only could it be found easily, but you may end up with circles under your eyes from sleeping on your items.
  • Make sure whoever you are hiding your goods from doesn't find this web page. Delete only this page from your history. If your entire history is gone, they might become suspicious if they notice.
  • If your hiding places are found, stay calm. Try to think of a good excuse beforehand. Although you might still get in trouble, you'll be in less trouble if your parents believe you've been lent and ashtray by someone at school. Better naive, than if they believe you're the devil incarnate. Perhaps you were minding it for that person or some such.
  • Be sure not to hide anything in something that someone might use or throw out (such as a tissue box).
  • If your bed is on a box spring, you can slide thin items such as diaries between the mattress and the box spring.
  • There are also commercially and home made tools available to help you hide your valuables. They help by essentially camouflaging their contents. Examples include book safes, diversion safes and stash tubes.
  • You may want to create things that look like they have something hidden in them but in truth, don't.
  • Another option is to put it in an attic. If you have a tiled ceiling get a small box lift a tile put the box up and to one side then lower the tile, better if it's in the center of the room where no tall objects you could stand on are.
  • Maybe you can take a Crayola wax crayon box and empty out all of the crayons. Now you can hide small toys, phone numbers or even money. The last step is to put it anywhere maybe in your desk or you might want to put it where you put blank sheets of paper, duotangs, pencils, sharpies etc.
  • Try hiding things inside your pillowcase or compartments for batteries like flash-lights or TV remote.
  • If you want to hid a smaller thing put it between your bed and bed frame and then cover it with the a sheet. Make sure your mom or dad doesn't clean the sheets!
  • Don't tell anyone or they will be tempted to blurt out.
  • If you have a photo album, you could put it behind your pictures.
  • A pillow case can make a good hiding place for smaller objects.
  • For small personal items, most discreet way of hiding them are underneath your trash bag from your trash bin. One of the last places your siblings would look.
  • Cut a small slit in your box spring and put stuff in there.
  • You could hide it in your suitcase or in your hamper, if you do your own laundry.
  • You can hide flat things underneath a fitted sheet on a mattress, as long as it is not on the end that you sleep on.
  • If you have an old purse or backpack, buy a new one. Use the new one for carrying stuff, and hide things in the old one.

Warnings

  • Please do not forget to erase your browser history of this website or your parents might find out where you hide your stuff.
  • If you forget where you hid something then rethink and try your best to remember it. Go back if you need to. Thinking hard will help. Don't panic.
  • Detection Dogs will not be foiled by any of this if you are attempting to hide money, alcohol, drugs or prohibited food stuffs.
  • With any hiding of stuff there is the chance of getting caught. Weigh up those consequences and parental reactions first. Obviously if you're hiding love notes in your room and your parents find them, they may not be too happy. But consider how mad they'll be if they find cigarettes.
