High Five Someone

High fives are a great way of encouraging, congratulating, or sharing your excitement with other people.

Steps

  1. Find a partner. High five requires dual proficiency, Therefore, your partner should be genial.
  2. Raise one of your hands to the side of your body in proximity to your shoulder with your fingers extended and pointing skyward in the “five” part of a high five. The person to whom you are directing your high five will, hopefully, catch on to what you are doing, and will be primed to reciprocate. If not, you will have to shout out to him/her, "High Five" or "Up High."
    • If the other person is on your right, hoist your right hand. If they are on your left, perform the action with your left hand. In standard convention, your opponent will suspend all other activity and join in implementing the high five.
  3. Make sure the other person's hand is hoisted, at the same height as yours.
  4. Join your hand toward your partner’s hand while he/she reciprocates.
  5. Contact your partner’s hand. Once you feel and hear the gratifying *tap* of hand upon hand, conclude with a hand closing gesture in a casual manner.

Tips

  • Make sure you are staring at the person's elbow, looking at your own will probably get you a high-five in the face.
  • When attempting a high five, be sure to keep your fingers loose and not spread too much. Avoid cupping the hand as to avoid an awkward sound. Also if your fingers are too far apart it may intimidate your partner. Then they won't want to high five you anymore.
  • If the other person doesn't register the fact that you want to high five, ignores you, or otherwise doesn't want to give you a high five, you can run your high five hand through your hair so you don't embarrass yourself to other bystanders that see you failed your high five attempt.
