Hook up an Xbox 360

For parents with younger children, hooking up a Xbox 360 can be challenging (even more challenging to someone who's new to the world of video game consoles). This will be a great help to people who want to teach this to their children or learn this for themselves.

Steps

  1. Prepare a workspace. Before bringing the Xbox in, prepare a hard, flat surface near your TV. Take the Xbox out of the box and put in on this surface. Then, remove all of the cords from the box.
  2. Connect the display output cables. If you have an HDTV, plug the HDMI cable in. Otherwise, use the cord with the yellow, white, and red wires. Make sure the cable you have selected is plugged into both the TV and the Xbox!
  3. Connect the power cord. Plug one end of the cord into the Xbox, and the other into the power brick (pictured above).
  4. Plug the power brick into an outlet. Make sure the outlet is close enough to where you plan to keep the Xbox.
  5. Turn the console on. Now that the wires are all hooked up, station your Xbox on a flat surface. If you are using a wireless controller, tap the power button (pictured above) lightly to turn the controller on.
  6. Set up the controllers. Your controllers could be wireless or wired. To connect a wireless controller, hold down the 'X' button in the middle of the controller until it begins flashing. Then, press the small, white button on the front of the Xbox console. The console's lights will begin to flash - this is your cue to hold the similar small, white button on top of the controller. If you have a wired controller, simply plug the controller's cable into a corresponding port on the front of the Xbox.
  7. Start playing. Finally, you can press the silver button on the left of the Xbox to open the disc tray. Insert a game disc or movie and press the silver button again. You may now proceed to play video games or watch movies.

Tips

  • Some TV sets have multiple HDMI inputs so when switching over make sure you go to the right one.
  • If you have a wireless controller, make sure that the back compartment is loaded with batteries.
  • The cord with the yellow, white, and red wires should have a small box with a switch. If you are having problems with video output, check that the switch's setting corresponds with your TV (HDTV or SDTV).

Warnings

  • Never move the system while it is on and a game is inside. This could potentially cause the lens that reads the game to move, ruining the game.
  • The Xbox is a very delicate piece of hardware. Make sure that everyone who uses it treats it with the proper sensitivity.
  • Avoid moving the XBox while it is running, make sure it is fully powered off before moving it. If you don't, you could damage data on the hard drive. (The same applies for playstations, older Xboxes, and the Xbox one.)
