Install Homemade Straight Pipe

Steps

  1. Park the car on level ground. Place step behind both rear tires to prevent movement.
  2. Make sure car is completely cooled down.
  3. Proceed underneath the vehicle from the rear. Wearing safety goggles measure the length of the muffler.
    • Using the rough measurement plus an additional {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} for expected error, or other mistakes made while measuring. Purchase the pipe and 2 clamps (1 piece) or 3 clamps (2 pieces). Along with string.
  4. Repeat step 1 and 2 if needed after purchasing items.
  5. Proceed back underneath the vehicle from the rear. Using the string, tie it around each end of the muffler. Attach it above in a fixed position, so that the muffler will not fall.
  6. Cut the two ends of the muffler with a reciprocating saw. Freeing it from tailpipes then untie the strings to drop the muffler.
  7. Clean up any rough edges on the existing pipes with a file.
  8. Hold the straight pipes up to ensure proper fit. Trim any pieces that would hinder a proper installation.
  9. Slip pipes onto the tailpipe and mid pipe. Connect the new pipes so that they can be held up without assistance.
  10. Take the clamps and put them on each end that was connected. Tighten each nut equally until tight.
  11. Go through and tighten all the nuts, ensuring proper tightness.
  12. Use exhaust paste around each overlapping connection. Let dry for the time allotted on instructions of exhaust paste.
  13. Check for leaks by test driving and starting vehicle. After the paste has dried.
