Installing the Recovery Console [RC] in windows 2000 or XP can be confusing for many people. This simple how-to shows you how it's done.
Steps
- Put in your Windows Operating System Installation CD
- Click Start > Run
- In the Run box, type "X:\i386\WinNT32.exe /cmdcons" without the quotes [X represents your CD drive letter; if it's D: replace X with D]
- Click 'Yes' to install the recovery console
Tips
- At start-up you can now choose your Windows operating system or RC
- RC provides access to your hard drive's contents in the event of an operating system crash, blue screen, etc.
- Read Microsoft KB article 307545 if you can't start Windows because of a problem with the Windows Registry
- RC provides you with a limited DOS-like interface to access your hard drive
Warnings
- Install RC and use it, at your own risk, only if Windows won't start or some other catastrophe has already occurred. It's easy to make bad things worse.
