Keep an Opened Bag of Marshmallows Fresh
If you don't finish the marshmallows the first time the packet is opened, what do you do to stop them from going stale? Here is an easy solution.
Steps
Bread method
- Add a piece or two of white bread to the opened bag of marshmallows.
- Twist the opened top of the bag together tightly.
- Seal using a twist tie or a rubber band.
- Store out of direct light and in a cool, dry place. This easy solution will keep the marshmallows soft and fresh for longer.
Freezer method
- Place unused marshmallows into a resealable freezer bag. The type with a zipper lock is preferred.
- Seal the bag.
- Place in the freezer. When you need to use them, simply remove from the freezer about 10-15 minutes before using. However, note that it is actually easier to slice frozen marshmallows if you're using them for baking or decorating, in which case, don't let them thaw before cutting.
Tips
- The bread method can also be used for soft, chewy cookies.
- The bread method can also be used to soften already hardened marshmallows. Simply repeat the above steps but add the bread to hard marshmallows. Let it stand for a few days, after which time, the marshmallows should be soft again.
- Replace the pieces of bread if you need to do the bag up again.
Things You'll Need
- Piece or two of white bread; use slices for larger packages of marshmallows
- Rubber band or twist tie
