Make Cookie Cutters from Regular Aluminum Foil

Make a cookie cutter using only a sheet of aluminum foil and some tape! No need for other items like copper wire or aluminum pie pans. This article is for lazy and somewhat creative people who don't want to leave home and yet still want to make cute gingerbread men.

If you don't have any foil, your neighbor probably will. Tell them it's for a cookie cutter (and those cookies you're going to make with it!) and you'll make a new friend.

Steps

  1. Tear out a sheet of aluminum foil.
  2. Lay the sheet out so that the longest side is horizontal.
  3. Fold up 1/2 inch (1.27cm) to 1 inch (2.5cm) section.
  4. Continue to fold over until you have a long strip of rather sturdy foil. Making it this thick will help it keep its shape.
  5. Fold the strip into whatever shape you desire. A longer sheet of foil will mean more strip to work with. Experiment with creasing the foil in different directions to find out different ways to create Drawing Shapes and Forms.
  6. When you have reached your desired shape, tape the ends together with whatever kind of sticky (adhesive) tape you have laying around. Just make sure it's clean. Try regular transparent sticky tape.

Tips

  • Making a really big cookie cutter? (Awesome!) Tape multiple strips together.
  • If you need more stability, attaching a piece of foil strip across the top of the shape helps. The image shows "real" cookie cutters - notice how some have stability strips or handles.
  • If not strong, cut a strip of a foil pan and tape it on.

Warnings

  • Many aluminum foil boxes have a sharp metal edge with which to cut the foil - watch your fingers!
  • If you use aluminum thicker than basic aluminum foil, such as a disposable baking pan, be aware that the cut or torn edges can be very sharp and stiff enough to cut significantly deeper than, say, paper. Be careful when cutting it and roll the cut edges over.

Things You'll Need

  • Aluminum foil
  • Ruler or edge to help you tear the foil
  • Tape
