Make French Fries Using a Deep Fryer

French fries, or frieten as the Belgians call them, are excellent eats, but most people get theirs at restaurants or buy them pre-cut, frozen and often pre-cooked. But you can make them fresh at home, too. All you need to get started is a deep fryer, a decent knife and a cutting board.

Ingredients

  • 6 potatoes
  • Frying oil (Peanut, sunflower and canola oils are good choices)

Steps

  1. Wash six medium potatoes with clean water. Peeling them is optional unless they're very dirty.
  2. Cut the potatoes in half, then into quarters, and finally into strips. They don't have to be perfectly straight like the ones you see in a restaurant, just make them long.
  3. Heat the oil in the deep fryer to {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}.
  4. Get a basket or bowl ready to put the cooked fries in and line it with a paper towel.
  5. To cook, put the potato strips into the deep fryer for 6–7 minutes or until they're golden and crispy. Check every so often and give the fries a good shake. Be careful, they will burn easily.
  6. After cooking, take out the fries and put them in the basket or serving bowl. Be careful—they will be very hot.
  7. Leave them to cool for a few minutes, if you want.
  8. Serve and enjoy.

Tips

  • If you want skinless french fries, peel off the skin before cutting.
  • You can cook fries at the same time as other fried foods, such as chicken strips.
  • Add chopped onions to the frying potatoes to add taste. Seasoning them after cooking ups the flavor ante up quite a bit, too.
  • Since oil blasts water out of the potatoes, use more oil in the fryer, as the fries will soak up less, paradoxically.

Warnings

  • The french fries will be hot after coming out of the oil so allow them to cool before eating them unless you want to burn your mouth.
  • Hot oil in a fryer is extremely dangerous, and if spilled it will cause a fire. Throwing water onto it will only feed the fire oxygen. So, make sure the fryer is in a place where it can't easily fall, its chord out of the way very well, and if possible, a fire extinguisher nearby. Having an escape plan is also advisable.
  • The oil will be very hot, so do not under any circumstances dip your finger in the oil.
