Make Friends Lists on Facebook

Your boss has just asked you to be Facebook Friends. Instead of turning him or her down, learn to make Friends lists on Facebook. You'll manage exactly who can see your content so that you don't show your boss that embarrassing picture from last weekend's party.

Steps

Using Built-In Close Friends, Acquaintances and Restricted Lists

  1. Login to your Facebook account using your username and password.
  2. Select "Friends" on the left sidebar on your home page.
  3. Choose "Close Friends" from the list page that pops up.
  4. Click the "On This List" drop-down menu and choose "Friends."
  5. Click the images of the friends that you want to add or remove from the list. Then click "Finish."
  6. Return to your list page. Edit the "Acquaintances" or "Restricted" lists as needed.
    • The "Acquaintances" list should include people with whom you don't need to maintain close contact. Their information will rarely appear in your news feed.
    • The "Restricted" list contains people who can only see your public posts or posts in which you tag the person. These people will see none of your other posts.

Editing Smart Lists

  1. Select "Friends," which is on the left sidebar of your homepage.
  2. View your smart lists. Smart lists are generated by Facebook by information that you add to your Timeline. You will see lists for your profession, your company, your hometown and your education history, for instance.
  3. Click the list that you want to manage. A news feed consisting of members from your list will pop up.
  4. Select "Manage List" from the top right corner of the news feed. Choose the field that you want to update from the drop-down menu.
  5. Add Friends to your list using the "Add (Name) to this list" suggestion field or by clicking pictures of Friends under "List Suggestions."
  6. Return to your list page to edit other smart lists.

Creating Custom Lists

  1. Choose "Friends" from the sidebar on the left side of your home page.
  2. Press "Create List" at the top of the page.
  3. Type the name of your list in the "List Name" field. Type the names of Friends into the "Members" field.
  4. Return to your lists page. The name of the list that you created should be on the page.

Tips

  • You can add Friends to lists while you are visiting their Timeline. Hover your cursor over the "Friends" button and select the list to which you want to add your Friend from the drop-down menu.
