Make Hot Buttered Rum Batter

Hot buttered rum is a drink made by adding a mixture of ingredients to rum. The mixture is easy to make and lasts a long time, making it a great gift for the holiday season. It is also just super tasty, making it a nice treat for a party or just to drink and home. Why buy in the store when you can make your own at home?

Ingredients

  • {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} vanilla ice cream, not ice milk. French vanilla ice cream works well. It should be softened, but not soupy.
  • 1 pound dark brown sugar
  • 1 pound butter, chunked (no substitutions)

Steps

  1. Put the ice cream into the mixing bowl. Turn the mixer on low to medium speed.
  2. Start adding the brown sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, until it's fully blended in.
  3. Add in chunks of butter. You need to do this fairly fast; you want slivers or bits of butter in the mix. If the butter gets too soft, stop everything and put it all in the fridge for a bit, and let the butter harden up. Then proceed.
  4. Once everything is blended, pour into your containers and then place them into the freezer.

Tips

  • You can add a combination of spices, such as nutmeg, cinnamon, or spice blend. But if you're giving the batter as a gift, not everyone likes every spice. So one idea is to include various bottles of spices with the gift. Or, if you are having a party, put out different single spices or blends and let everyone put what they want or nothing in their drinks.
  • For non-alcoholic hot buttered rum: Take one tablespoon of batter, put it into a mug, add 1/8 tsp (adjust depending on taste) rum flavouring or extract, fill with boiling water. Add spices as wanted.
  • To make hot buttered rum: Take one tablespoon (or to taste) of batter, put it into a mug, add 1 shot of rum. Pour in boiling water stir and drink. Add spices as wanted.

Things You'll Need

  • Containers for storing the mixed batter. Figure at least two wide opening containers per batch. Old ice cream containers and freezer containers work well.
