  5. Place the filled cupcake holders on a pan. Put in the oven.
  6. Remove using oven mitts when the crayons are completely melted. This will take around 2 - 6 minutes, depending on the melted consistency you're after; keep an eye on them.
  7. Let them cool for approximately 30 minutes. Once cooled, remove from the cupcake holder; they're now ready for reuse.
  8. Have fun coloring!

Tips

  • If you don't have enough of each color to do single color ones, try color harmonies like blue-green, red-orange, pink-purple or all warm colors or all cool colors. Making each of them different within a range of colors can allow some gorgeous effects and still make it easier to do green grass and blue sky if that's what you want.
  • Other mold shapes can be used if you have them, such as the star shapes shown in this image.
  • Single colors can also be made from worn out crayons. These take longer to accumulate though.
  • These lovely creations aren't just for children! Many adults have a kid "inside" that needs nurturing. So when you need a quick and refreshing break from all your adult responsibilities, take 5 minutes to draw using these crayons; you can even use them to create a mandala.

Warnings

  • Making these can permanently stain metal cupcake tins if the crayons melt directly on the metal, you may want get a secondhand cupcake tin from the thrift store and use it exclusively to make rainbow crayons.
  • An adult should place and remove the crayons in the oven.
  • Be careful if using a cheese grater or pencil sharpener to shave the crayons.
  • Do not fill the holder too full or the crayon wax will spill in the oven. Make more smaller ones rather than a few larger ones.
