Make Sourmus (Stuffed Cabbage With Sauerkraut)
This is a delicious dish made with stuffed cabbage and sauerkraut. You may have not ever seen it in your life, but it's wonderful. Try it below.
Ingredients
- 2 heads of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 onion (chopped)
- 1 tsp seasoning salt
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- 1 cup uncooked white rice
- 2 - 16 oz. jars or cans of sauerkraut
- 1 lb bacon
- 8 oz. water
Steps
- Mix ground beef, Italian sausage, onion, seasoning salt, garlic salt, and rice together - set aside.
- Cut the cabbage hearts out of the cabbage heads.
- Blanch cabbages (Bring a pot of water to a boil, and put in the heads of cabbage to soften the leaves. Leave in about 15 minutes until you can remove each leaf.)
- Pull off the top leaves carefully. When you get as many large leaves as you want, set them aside.
- Put meat mixture into leaves and roll like a burrito.
- Layer the stuffed leaves into a big pot (between layers add some sauerkraut (including juice).
- Cut up left over cabbage and put it on top of the layers.
- Add 8 oz. water.
- Layer bacon on top.
- Simmer about 2 hours with lid on pot.
- Finished.
Tips
- "Frank's Red Hot®" is a terrific topper for this dish.
Warnings
- Too high of heat will burn the bottom layer of the stuffed cabbage. Keep it just hot enough to simmer.
